Blocked Field Goal Keeps Raiders on Track in Rivalry Win

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Clayton Bosma blocked a game-tying field goal attempt in the waning seconds as No. 13 Northwestern escaped No. 7 Dordt on a chilly, overcast fall day.

"It was a great team win," head coach Matt McCarty said. "Our defense made the big stops when needed. I'm proud of the discipline they executed with for 60 minutes."

The Raider defense was all over the field, forcing turnovers and creating big stops to make its mark on the game. With the Defenders driving into the red zone in the opening quarter, Ben Egli and Jacob Dragstra combined for the stop on 4th and 2 to put an end to Dordt's early scoring chance.

When Northwestern needed a stop again early in the second, Ben Egli picked off a pass at the 2 to put an end to a nine-play drive and give the Raiders a chance to breathe.

Yet another Dordt scoring opportunity was thwarted before the half as Parker Fryar stuffed Dordt's Kolson Kruse at the 29-yard line, effectively ending the half at 0-0.

Northwestern scored the only points on the day when Eli Stader knocked in a 38-yarder to put his team ahead with 12:39 remaining in the third quarter. The Stader field goal was set up in part by Logan Meyer's 19-yard rush to the Dordt 23.

Jumping ahead to the fourth, Dordt was driving with a chance to tie or win, and on 4th and 1, the stifling Raider defense goaded the Defenders into a field goal try with 17 seconds on the clock. Clayton Bosma read the play beautifully, coming off the edge to get a hand on the ball and secure the Raider win.
