Offense Runs Wild as Raiders Dominate Chargers at Home

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Raider offense set multiple rushing records and the defense nearly pitched a shutout as Northwestern won in dominating fashion over the visiting Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday afternoon.

Despite an early three-and-out on their first possession of the game, Northwestern exploded out of the gates with a scintillating start. Konner McQuillan took the first snap of the second drive 80 yards to the house untouched and it was 7-0 quickly in favor of the Raiders.

The following offensive series produced much of the same for Northwestern. A 23-yard burst off left tackle from Logan Meyer set up McQuillan again as he scampered 52 yards to the endzone in what looked like a carbon copy of his first run, extending the lead to 14-0 in favor of Northwestern.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kyler Fritz jumped on a loose ball to set up Northwestern with great field position. Two plays later, Colby Duncan punched it in on the ground from 12 yards out, and Eli Stader tacked on the extra point to make it a three-score lead.

The Raider defense then stepped up to the plate and quickly forced a three-and-out, getting the ball back for the offense who promptly drove 94 yards, capped by a 35-yard Meyer run and the lead ballooned to 28-0.

The first two Raider drives of the second quarter resulted in Gabe Martin rushing touchdowns, and the defense continued to hold down the Briar Cliff offense heading into the two-minute warning.

With 26 seconds remaining until halftime, Eli Stader drilled a school-record 60-yard field goal that made the score 45-0 as the two teams headed into the locker room.

The second half opened with a Luke Jeltema interception as the Chargers were threatening inside the 30-yard line.

The following two offensive drives for Northwestern were punctuated by Martin's third and fourth touchdowns on the day as the Raiders continued to expose the Briar Cliff defense.

In the fourth quarter, Duncan found Carter Van Donge over the middle from 15 yards out to put the finishing touches on a five play, 44 yard drive that put the Raiders up 64-0.

Another Jeltema interception set up the ninth rushing touchdown on the afternoon for the Raiders, as Isaiah Robinson plowed in from one yard out. Gianna Bennett's point after made the lead 71-0.

Briar Cliff found the endzone on their final drive of the game to put an end to the shutout from the Northwestern defense, but damage had already been done as the Raiders cruised to a 71-7 victory.
