Defense and Timely Buckets Lift Raiders on the Road

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Points off turnovers and points in the paint played a key role as Northwestern defeated William Penn on Tuesday evening in the first road contest of the season.

Both teams played an even first half as the two squads traded blows. The Raiders were able to build an eight point advantage inside the 10-minute mark with help from the brother duo of Alex Van Kalsbeek and Jesse Van Kalsbeek, but the Statesmen were able to tie and subsequently take the lead via the long ball. The remainder of the first half saw the Raiders continue to build a lead before William Penn would even the score. The Statesmen would convert a layup at the horn to regain the lead going into the break.

Alex Van Kalsbeek dominated the early part of the second half, scoring the first 10 Raider points but the Statesmen held it close. Connor Geddes and Jalen Langsy knocked down 3-pointers on back to back possessions to give Northwestern a four point lead just before the halfway mark of the half and from there the Raiders did not surrender the lead. Jesse Van Kalsbeek made a pair of free throws to push the lead to 10, and Northwestern continued their sound defensive play to close it out.
