Strong Second Half Not Enough in the Corn Palace

Mitchell, S.D.- Northwestern fell to Dakota Wesleyan (SD) with a final score of 67-55 on Wednesday at the Corn Palace.

Dakota Wesleyan (SD) took an early lead in the first quarter of their game against Northwestern, capitalizing on several turnovers. Avery Broughton started the scoring with a layup, and the home team extended their advantage to a nine-point lead with less than a minute left in the quarter. The Raiders struggled offensively, converting only four of 14 shots while committing five turnovers. The Tigers' defense was strong, with five steals, helping them to a 19-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter of the game between the Red Raiders and Tigers, Dakota Wesleyan extended their lead with consistent scoring, highlighted by a 19-point advantage at one point. Emma Yost contributed early with a layup at the start of the quarter, assisted by Rylee Rosenquist, who later made a 3-pointer to push the home team's lead. Northwestern's Hali Anderson responded with a 3-pointer midway through the quarter, but the Tigers maintained their momentum with key free throws and a 3-pointer by Mya Wilson. Despite the Raiders' efforts, including a deep 3-pointer by Molly Schany at the buzzer, Dakota Wesleyan closed the quarter with a 20-14 scoring advantage.

In the third quarter, the Red Raiders outscored the Tigers 18-10, cutting into the home team's lead. Early in the quarter, Dakota Wesleyan led by as much as 15 points, but Northwestern responded with a series of effective plays, including a layup by Maren Nerem and multiple contributions from Schany, who scored several key baskets in the paint. The Raiders' defensive pressure resulted in multiple steals, with Kylie Foss making notable contributions in this category. Despite Dakota Wesleyan's efforts, including a 3-pointer by Avery Broughton, Northwestern's persistent scoring efforts allowed them to close the gap by the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers held a steady lead, highlighted by a key scoring stretch early in the quarter. Rylee Rosenquist of DWU made significant contributions, including a layup and free throws, to help secure the lead. The Raiders' Anderson and Lexie Van Kekerix made efforts to close the gap, with Anderson contributing free throws and Van Kekerix adding a 3-pointer and a layup. Despite Northwestern's attempts to rally with a few strategic timeouts and scoring from Schany, Dakota Wesleyan maintained control and ended the quarter with an 18-13 scoring advantage, concluding the game with a 67-55 victory.
