Raiders Use Second-Half Burst to Pull Away from Dakota Wesleyan

MITCHELL, S.D. - The No. 12-ranked Northwestern men's basketball team secured a victory over Dakota Wesleyan, 87-68 on Wednesday at the Corn Palace. The win marks the Raiders' third consecutive victory at the venue.

In the first half, Northwestern started strong with a layup from Kaleb Booth, taking an early lead. The Tigers responded with Tampa Scott's jumper, briefly tying the game at 2-2. The Red Raiders then embarked on a scoring spree, highlighted by Alex Van Kalsbeek's consistent play, pushing their lead to nine points at 19-13 by the 1:23 mark. The Tigers struggled to keep up, despite Randy Rosenquist contributing solidly with both a layup and a three-pointer. The Raiders maintained their momentum, ending the half with a 40-31 lead, aided by Jesse Van Kalsbeek's effective scoring in the paint.

"I thought our guys just step by step, brick by brick, we built up the lead and had a good finish to the first half," head coach Kris Korver said.

In the second half, the Raiders extended their lead significantly, scoring 47 points to the Tigers' 37. Alex Van Kalsbeek played a pivotal role, contributing with multiple layups and free throws, as well as defensive plays including blocks and steals. The Tigers hit key threes, but the Raiders maintained control with efficient scoring and strong defensive rebounds. Northwestern capitalized on the Tigers' turnovers, leading to a substantial advantage by the end of the half.

"Our guys did a nice job defensive rebounding and getting out in transition in that second half to open it up a little bit more," Korver added.

The victory brings Northwestern to a 6-0 start for the second consecutive season.
