Raiders Open GPAC Play with a Win

Yankton, S.D. - Northwestern defeated Mount Marty 66-52 on Saturday at Cimpl Arena in Yankton, South Dakota.

The first quarter of the game saw Northwestern take an early lead with a score of 15-9. Northwestern's Maren Nerem opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at 9:13, setting the pace for the Raiders. Despite Mount Marty's initial response with free throws from Sidney Thue and a layup from Kaela Martinez, the Red Raiders regained control. Hali Anderson was instrumental for the Raiders, contributing two 3-pointers and a layup, including a crucial 3-pointer at 1:05 that helped extend their lead. The Lancers struggled with turnovers, committing five in the quarter, which hampered their ability to close the gap.

In the second quarter, both teams scored 16 points, maintaining a balanced period. The Lancers initially took a brief lead with a jumper by Sidney Thue, followed by a 3-pointer from Emma Jarovski, putting them ahead 17-15. However, the Raiders responded with a series of successful plays, including a layup by Emily Terwee and a 3-pointer by Hali Anderson, to establish a 27-19 lead. Toward the end of the quarter, Mount Marty reduced the deficit with a 3-pointer by Signe Bang and a layup by Thue, but Northwestern held their ground to keep the scores tied for the quarter.

In the third quarter, Northwestern maintained a slight edge over Mount Marty, outscoring them 17-15. Early in the quarter, Maren Nerem scored a layup at 9:47 to extend Northwestern's lead. Stevi Fallis of Mount Marty responded with a jumper and a layup, reducing the deficit to 33-29 by 7:05. Lexie Van Kekerix contributed significantly for the Raiders with a 3-pointer at 1:23, pushing the score to 42-36. In the closing moments, Hali Anderson hit a 3-pointer at 0:35 to secure Northwestern's lead, ending the quarter at 48-40.

In the fourth quarter, Northwestern extended their lead by scoring 18 points compared to Mount Marty's 12. The quarter saw Northwestern's Hali Anderson making significant contributions with multiple layups, including a key one that pushed the score to 65-50. Molly Schany also played a pivotal role, particularly toward the end, by scoring a layup and a free throw to increase Northwestern's lead to 63-50. Mount Marty struggled to keep pace, with Emma Jarovski hitting a 3-pointer, but the team's efforts were not enough to close the gap as the Raiders maintained control throughout the quarter.
