Raiders Victorious in Five Sets Over Hastings

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In the finale of their week-long homestand, the Northwestern volleyball team completed a furious comeback to defeat Hastings in five sets on Saturday night inside the Bultman Center.

NWC 3, HASTINGS 2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 15-8)
How It Happened
Northwestern and Hastings traded points early in the first set as the two sides found themselves tied at 17 all. The Broncos proceeded to go on a run of four straight points, forcing two Northwestern timeouts in the process, before closing out the first set 25-20.

The second set started quickly for the Raiders, as Emma Westphal and Maddy Sampson combined to stuff Hastings at the net on back-to-back points. The block party continued for the home squad before Hastings went on a 10-3 run to knot the score at 16-16. A Jazlin Douma kill followed by consecutive kills by Alysen Dexter gave the Raiders a little cushion, but the lead would fade as Hastings stormed back, scoring five of the final eight points to win the set 25-23 and take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

The Broncos would jump out to an early 4-3 lead in the third set, but the Raiders would not go quietly into the evening as Northwestern rattled off three straight kills to gain the upper hand, 6-4. The two sides would trade points again before Zavyr Metzger and Emma Westphal teamed up to block a Hastings attack, and Douma finished off a Stella Winterfeld set to force a quick Bronco timeout. The Raiders continued to stuff the stat sheet as a Savonne Sterk kill gave Northwestern a 15-11 lead and from there the Raiders didn't look back. Sterk scored three of the final four points for Northwestern in the third set to keep the match alive as the Raiders won 25-23.

Hastings scored two early points to open set four before Northwestern put down seven straight points. Set four proved to be one of runs as both Hastings and Northwestern swapped scoring rallies before a Zavyr Metzger block led to a Bronco timeout. Kills by Douma, Sterk, and Dexter gave the Raiders a boost as Northwestern closed out the fourth set with a 25-16 win to push the match to a fifth set.

The winner-take-all set saw Northwestern jump out to a quick 6-1 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Douma and Westphal. Two more Douma kills, and one by Maddy Sampson brought the score to 9-3 in favor of Northwestern. Two more Raider kills by Dexter and Sterk forced Hastings to call a timeout, and that proved beneficial as the Broncos went on a 3-0 run coming out of the break. Northwestern scored the final three points of the match, capped by a Jazlin Douma kill, to win the set 15-8 and complete the comeback, winning the match three sets to two.
