Raiders Topple Tigers in Dominant Three Sets

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Raiders handily defeated Dakota Wesleyan in three sets inside the Bultman Center on Saturday night.

NWC 3, DWU 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-21)
How It Happened
Northwestern jumped out to an early lead in the first set with Emma Westphal controlling the attack for the home squad. Dakota Wesleyan fought to even it up but the Raiders offense cruised early, building a 15-10 lead and forcing a Tiger timeout. Northwestern went on a 10-3 run from there, with kills from Jazlin Douma and Maddy Sampson to take a 1-0 match advantage.

The Raiders brought the same intensity to open the second set as they did in the first, building a quick 10-4 lead. Alysen Dexter made her grand entrance on Senior Day by pelting the hardwood off the set, helping the Raiders build their lead. Following a Dakota Wesleyan timeout, the two sides traded points but the Tigers weren't able to close the game. Leading 19-9, the Raiders scored seven of the final 10 points with help from the right arm of Zavyr Metzger and Northwestern grabbed a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the teams found themselves locked in a battle with both sides matching one another's points. A kill from Savonne Sterk and an attack error from the Tigers gave the Raiders a 6-3 lead, but Dakota Wesleyan clawed back to bring the set within one point at 8-7. The Raiders found their stride midway through the set, rattling off five points in a row and growing the lead to 18-12. Another Alysen Dexter kill stretched the lead, but the Tigers found their way back into the set once more. Stella Winterfeld added to the Raider lead, and Northwestern dug deep to close out the match, winning the third set 25-21.
