Northwestern Sweeps Through Briar Cliff

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – With the regular season beginning to wind down, the top-ranked Red Raider volleyball team pulled off another sweep, this time defeating Briar Cliff on the road.

How It Happened
Briar Cliff came out firing, building up a 6-2 lead to gain the early momentum. However, Northwestern took over from there, going on an 8-1 run to grab a 14-10 advantage on a block by Zavyr Metzger and Jazlin Douma. They continued to add on, creating the largest lead of the set at 25-14 with a 6-1 run to end it.

Northwestern was in control in the second, hitting their best percentage of the match (.393) on their way to a 25-13 win.

In a third set where both teams had scoring runs, the Raiders prevailed 25-17. They started the set with a 13-2 lead, with six straight points coming off the service run from Liv Reitsma. Briar Cliff continued to battle, taking 10 of the next 11 points to come within two points. The Raiders responded, going on a 6-1 run, building up an insurmountable lead, and claiming the sweep.

Game Notes:
  • Jazlin Douma recorded her 1,500th career kill between her time at Northwestern and Wayne State (Neb.).
  • She led all players in kills (16), hitting .353 and adding 11 digs.
  • Alysen Dexter picked up 11 kills and a service ace, also hitting .579 on the night.
  • Liv Reitsma dished out 23 assists, her third straight match of 20 or more assists.
  • Jori Hajek joined Douma in double-digit digs with 13.
  • Northwestern hit .287 and held Briar Cliff to a .009 efficiency.
  • The Raiders have now swept their opponents in 17 of 24 matches.
