Red Raiders Begin 2024 with GPAC Win

Davis notches career-high 18 points

YANKTON, S.D. – Kaydin Davis scored a career-high 18 points, and Northwestern (10-4, 5-2 GPAC) had no trouble with Mount Marty (5-9, 1-6 GPAC) in their first game of the New Year.

"It's been a unique week for us as we've had some injuries and sickness on the team, but we had a lot of players step into bigger roles and we're going to need that moving forward," said head coach Kristin Rotert. "Lexie started tonight and has had a really good 4-6 weeks, and she was really solid for us. Kylie got in foul trouble early but has played well in the last month as well."

Needing a few moments to get into a rhythm with their new lineup, the Red Raiders fell behind 13-10 through the first five minutes, but after a Lexie Van Kekerix bucket pushed Northwestern ahead 14-13, the road squad did not trail for the rest of the game. The lead expanded to double-digits for the first time after a layup for Madison Naig made the score 32-21 in the second, while the Raiders ended the first half on a 7-0 run capped off by a Davis three.

After taking a 42-23 advantage into the break, Northwestern carried their run into the third quarter, starting the period on a 12-0 rally, allowing for a grand total of 19-0 over the course of 6:38. The lead reached its largest mark of 38 points in the fourth quarter on a trey by Naig, allowing time for 14 players to get minutes in the win.

"We didn't shoot the ball great today, but we did create a lot of shots," Rotert commented. "Our pace of play was tremendous from the start. We'll have to execute a bit better to compete with some of the top teams we have coming up, but you can't argue with the effort we put on the floor today."
