Raiders Fall in Defensive Battle to No. 8 Briar Cliff

Schany returns with double-double, TerWee with 19 points and 12 boards

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Strong post play from Molly Schany and Emily TerWee, alongside a career-high for Kylie Foss, gave No. 8-ranked Briar Cliff (12-3, 7-2 GPAC) all it could handle, as Northwestern (10-5, 6-3 GPAC) dropped a 74-71 decision in the Bultman Center.

"It was a good effort for us, and we played really hard," head coach Kristin Rotert remarked. "We weren't awesome the entire game, but we were right there with them. We had some good looks late and just needed one or two to fall."

In a conference matchup that was close the entire way, Northwestern battled ahead to start the first quarter. Emily TerWee layed the ball in to go up 8-7 and start a 7-0 run before Briar Cliff worked back ahead. The Raiders later closed the quarter on a high note, with Akaysa Duitscher drilling a three-pointer before the end of the first to put her team ahead 23-21.

The Raiders held the advantage for all but one minute of the second quarter, opening up their largest lead of the game at seven points (37-30) with 4:58 remaining on buckets for TerWee and Molly Schany.

Despite falling behind by one at the break, TerWee and Schany both scored to put the Raiders back ahead at the beginning of the third. Northwestern again extended its lead to seven on a Hali Anderson jump shot with 7:26 on the clock. Tides then turned Briar Cliff's way as they ended the third on an 8-2 run to start the final 10 minutes up 66-62.

The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle, with only 17 points being scored between the two sides. Northwestern tied the game at 66-66 with 6:16 to play before Briar Cliff scored the next five. Two possessions later, Kylie Foss knocked down a trey, sparking a 5-0 Raider run. The Chargers answered with a Konnor Sudmann and-one with 2:16 to play, and neither team could find the bottom of the net for the remainder of the contest.
