Women’s Basketball Returns to Winning Ways Against Hastings

Three Raiders score in double figures

ORANGE CITY, Iowa. – Northwestern snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday, defeating Hastings 79-61 in the Bultman Center, led by 25 points and 12 rebounds for Molly Schany.

"I thought we did a good job early on moving the ball and knowing what we're looking for in our offense," noted head coach Kristin Rotert. "We passed the ball really well, Molly brought a great post presence, and getting ourselves into a flow offensively was really noticeable from the beginning of the game."

In a close first quarter, Northwestern built up an early five-point lead before Hastings drew back even with four minutes on the clock. Schany scored the first six Red Raider points, becoming the 13th player in program history to record 1,500 career points during the run. Later in the quarter, the Raiders closed strong by going on a 5-0 run to take a 22-19 lead into the second.

The Raiders began to create separation in the second, opening up their first double-digit lead on a three for Lexie Van Kekerix, increasing their lead to as many as 13 points on multiple occasions, including a putback in the final second by Kaydin Davis to make the halftime score 46-33.

Despite Northwestern taking a lead into the break, Hastings outscored the Raiders 13-11 in the third quarter, bringing it back to single digits at the six-minute mark. However, Northwestern withstood the rally, going on a 9-0 run over two minutes in the fourth quarter to build up an 18-point lead. Davis then hit a three to make it 74-55 with two and a half minutes to go, securing the home-court win.
