Raiders Tripped Up by Morningside in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A cold shooting night left (RV) Northwestern (11-6, 7-4 GPAC) playing from behind as Morningside (9-7, 6-5 GPAC) held off a late push to defeat the Raiders 62-52.

"Morningside played tremendously and had a good plan," head coach Kristin Rotert stated. "We did not do enough to put ourselves in position to have a chance. We'll have to find a way to learn from this and look forward to Saturday."

The opening sequence saw both teams battling for an advantage, with Emily TerWee tying the game at 5-5 just 4:11 into the first quarter. Morningside answered with a run, taking the rest of the period 13-4 to lead 17-9 after the opening 10 minutes.

Northwestern showed resolve in the second quarter, fighting back within one at 20-19 after Lexie Van Kekerix hit one of her two threes to finish off a 10-0 rally. The defense was on full display for the final seven minutes of the half, with the two teams only combining for 15 points to make the Morningside lead 31-23 at the break.

Morningside's lead reached double figures for the first time in the third quarter as they expanded their advantage to as many as 26 points, leaving the Raiders with work to do in the final stanza.

The Raiders put together a valiant effort in the fourth, outscoring Morningside 18-7 and coming as close as 60-52 in the final minute, but it was Morningside who ended the night with the GPAC victory.
