No. 3 NWC Picks Up Massive Five Set Road Win Over No. 6 Viterbo

Jazlin De Haan records new career-highs in kills and digs; picks up seventh double-double of the season

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Playing in just their second match of the season that went more than three sets, the No. 3-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (14-1, 5-1 GPAC) picked up a thrilling five set road victory in a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) top-10 clash over No. 6-ranked Viterbo (16-3, 3-0 NSAA). Jazlin De Haan recorded new career-highs in kills and digs to pace the Red Raiders.
It was the home squad that jumped out to a quick lead in their home gym, taking the first three points. A big kill from De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) put the first point on the board for the Red Raiders. Following a Red Raider time out (12-7, Viterbo), Northwestern rallied off four-straight points to pull within one point at 12-11. The momentum would stay with the Red Raiders as they would take their first lead of the set at 18-17 with a Grace Tobin (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) kill, after going back and forth with the V-Hawks since the time out. Northwestern would take their largest lead of the set at 21-19, forcing Viterbo to use a time out. The first service ace for NWC came following the break from Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa), as the Red Raiders would go onto take the first set 25-20.

The V-Hawks held a slim advantage early in the second set, 8-5 at one point but NWC would battle back to even it up. Viterbo would rally off five-straight points as the Red Raiders used a time out to talk things over, trailing 13-8. Immediately following the time out, NWC got a kill from Tobin as they began to claw back into it. The two teams would trade points with the V-Hawks would continue to hold a slight advantage into the latter stages of the set. Viterbo would push the lead up to five points at 19-14 as Northwestern would use their second time out. The V-Hawks would go on to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 set two victory.

In the third set, Northwestern went to the arm of Dexter who picked up back-to-back kills to start the set. The Red Raiders went back to their bread and butter and relied on the outside hitters, opening up a 10-6 advantage and forcing a V-Hawk time out. The momentum continued out of the break in the action, as Northwestern tied their largest lead of the match of five points (12-7). Later, they would open up their largest lead of the match of six at 17-11 which prompted the second Viterbo time out to be taken. The V-Hawks would attempt to get back in the match, cutting the lead down to four (19-15), but a big kill from reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Defender of the Week Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa) put NWC at 20 points, and they would

Viterbo jumped out to another quick 3-0 advantage in the fourth set on their home floor, but a kill from Dexter followed by her second service ace of the match quickly got the Red Raiders back into it before momentum could fully shift to the home side. The Red Raiders took their first lead of the fourth set with a Jori Hajek (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) kill to make it 5-4. The two top-10 NAIA teams would battle it out as it would be knotted up at 13-13 midway through the set. For every V-Hawk push, Northwestern found an answer. Tied at 15-15, three-straight points for the Red Raiders saw the lead jump up to three late and Viterbo wanted to talk it over. The V-Hawks would respond with three-straight points out of the time out, cutting the Northwestern lead down to one (19-18). Two-straight massive kills from De Haan would cut the V-Hawk run and give Northwestern some breathing room with a 21-18 advantage. Yet again, the V-Hawks would cut that Raider lead down to one and the V-Hawks would come back to knot it up at 23-23, forcing a Northwestern time out. The match would go to extra points and a kill from Viterbo's main arm Kenzie Winker would send the match to a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set opened with Northwestern taking the first two points in the best-of-15, winner-take-all set. The V-Hawks responded with two points of their own. The two sides would switch benches after a big kill from Dexter as Northwestern held the 8-5 advantage. The V-Hawks would respond with three-straight points to even the score at 8-8. The Red Raiders would take an 11-9 lead to force a Viterbo time out. Following the break, Liv Reitsma (So., Papillion, Neb.) put down a service ace to give NWC a three-point lead. The V-Hawks would pull back within two with NWC at match point (14-12), as the Red Raiders would talk it over. Out of the time out, De Haan would put the exclamation mark on a phenomenal match, putting down her 27th kill of the match as Northwestern takes the victory in the top-10 clash with the 15-12 set five win.
