Northwestern Falls at Home to No. 11 College of Saint Mary

Red Raiders record season's second-best block total with 19

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 2-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (14-2, 5-2 GPAC) dropped a heartbreaking five-set battle to No. 11-ranked College of Saint Mary (16-3, 5-2 GPAC) Friday night inside the Bultman Center.

Things started out well for the Red Raiders on the night, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and, later, leading 13-9 after four-straight points and leading to a CSM time out. A 10-2 run would see College of Saint Mary come back to snag the first set from Northwestern, 25-22.

Despite dropping the opening set, Northwestern would respond positively in the second set. Going back and forth as the top-15 teams battled it out, Northwestern led 16-14 when the Flames went on a four-point run to take the 18-16 lead. Following a Red Raider time out, three straight-points would give NWC a one-point lead and they would never surrender it. CSM would tie it up twice, but five-straight points saw the Red Raiders even the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 set two victory.

Northwestern would heavily utilize the block in the third set, en route to taking the 2-1 match lead. Northwestern would hold a 13-6 lead and at that point had already recorded five of the seven blocks recorded in the set. The Red Raiders would carry that momentum from the blocks and use a 10-3 run to take the third set 25-11.

However, knocked down but not extinguished, the Flames would battle back in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set. CSM would jump out to a 13-7 lead and force an NWC time out. Following the break, the Red Raiders would tally five-straight to cut the College of Saint Mary lead down to two (14-12). The Flames would respond with a 6-2 run of their own to pull away. Northwestern would battle hard, cutting the lead down to three a few times but could not get past it, as the Flames took the set 25-21.

The fifth set started strong for Northwestern with a block from Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) and a service ace from Liv Reitsma (So., Papillion, Neb.). But three-straight points from the Flames ignited their run. The teams would switch benches with CSM leading 8-5. Northwestern would keep trying to get back into it, but never bringing it within three points. The Flames would take the final four points of the set to win in five sets, taking set five 15-8.
