Red Raiders Earn Sweep in NAIA Top-15 Clash Over Midland

Macay Van’t Hul ties the individual single-match program record for blocks

FREMONT, Neb. – The No. 3-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (13-1, 5-1 GPAC) used the block to sprint past the No. 13-ranked Midland Warriors (8-6, 4-2 GPAC), using 20 team blocks to move into sole possession of second-place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 5-1 mark in league play and snapping a three-game skid to the Warriors. Junior Macay Van't Hul tied the single-match program record with 13 blocks in the straight sets victory.
Wasting no time in the first set, Northwestern took a side out thanks to a kill from Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) and jumped out to a fast 6-0 lead with kills from four different Raiders to force a quick Midland time out. Northwestern would lead 7-2 at one point, but the Warriors would battle back to pull within two at 12-10. At that point, the Red Raiders called for a block party as they used four blocks to jump out to a 21-12 lead and would take the opening set 25-18. Northwestern recorded seven team blocks in the opening set.

Midland would look to fight back in the second set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead early. Following a Kyle Van Den Bosch time out, the Red Raiders would respond with seven of the next nine points to draw even at 12-12. The match would go back and forth for a few points, but four-straight points for Northwestern led by a pair of big blocks would give the Red Raiders a 19-17 advantage and force Midland to burn a time out. Down, but not out, the Warriors would stay within striking distance but the arms of Dexter and Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) would give NWC a 2-0 match lead with big kills late, as the Raiders take set two, 25-22.

Northwestern came out on fire in the third set, looking to put the match away quickly. The Red Raiders quickly jumped out to a 12-1 lead on 11-straight points, forcing the Warriors to burn both time outs early in the set. In that early run, the Red Raiders recorded five blocks. As much as everything pointed to a quick set, Midland settled down and fought their way back into it. Pulling to within four points (17-13), Northwestern would try to put it away again, pushing that lead back out to seven (21-14). Yet again, the Warriors would climb back, pulling to within three and forcing a Northwestern time out with NWC leading 23-20. The time out worked to settle the Raiders down, as a Dexter kill and a block from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) leader Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) would give Northwestern the 25-20 set victory and 13th sweep of the season.
