Red Raiders Pick Up a Pair of Sweeps on Day 1 of the Labor Day Classic

Van Den Bosch picks up career win No. 500 with sweep of Kansas Wesleyan

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Propelled by two more sweeps today, the No. 3-ranked Northwestern College women's volleyball team (7-0, 1-0 GPAC) remains perfect after the first day of the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic. Head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch picks up career win No. 500 in the victory over Kansas Wesleyan to start the day.
MATCH 1: (3) Northwestern 3, Kansas Wesleyan 0
Northwestern would open the Labor Day Classic with a bout against the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University (5-3, 0-0 KCAC). The Red Raiders dominated the match from start to finish, never allowing the Coyotes to score more than 17 points in a set.

Northwestern used a 15-3 sprint in the first set to dominate the Coyotes, leading 24-7. KWU would put up four-straight points of their own against set point, but Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) put down a kill for the final point of the set, prevailing 25-11.

More dominance from the Red Raiders in the second set as they flew out to a 10-2 advantage as service aces and a pair of kills from Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) would put NWC firmly in control right away in set two. Northwestern would keep the pressure on in the set, taking the set 25-11.

Kansas Wesleyan scored the first four points in the third set, looking to snag a set from the No. 3-ranked Red Raiders. But a kill from De Haan would stop the bleeding and start 5-0 run for the Raiders that gave them their first lead of the set at 7-5. After KWU stopped that small run, a 9-2 spurt would see the Raiders take control and they would go on to finish the set strong. The Red Raiders would score eight of the final 11 points of the match, taking set three 25-17 over the Coyotes.

MATCH 2: (3) Northwestern 3, (6) Park (Mo.) 0
In a thrilling top-10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) clash to end the first day in North Sioux City, the Red Raiders battled it out with the No. 6-ranked Park University (Mo.) Pirates (3-1, 0-0 HEART) to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Pirates stormed out of the gate in the second set, scoring the first six points and riding high on the early momentum. However, Northwestern would ride out the storm and remain within striking distance. Down 15-10 in the middle of the set, Northwestern would rip off an incredible 15-2 run to stun Park. A pair of service aces from Liv Reitsma (So., Papillion, Neb.) would force the Pirates to burn a time out as the Raider pulled even at 15-15. Immediately following the time out, Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) would give the Raiders their first lead of the set and the sprint was on as the run would be in full effect. Northwestern would go on to take complete control of the match with the 25-17 set two victory.

The third set saw two top-ranked NAIA teams continue to battle with a few points on each side early on. Following an early Park time out and a pair of points for the Pirates, giving them a 10-9 advantage, the Red Raiders ripped off six-straight points to take a 15-10 lead, thanks to a pair of service aces, this time, from Dexter. Northwestern would lead 22-16 and would hold off a late Park push as back-to-back kills from Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) and Dexter would give the Red Raiders the 25-20 set three win, taking the match in straight sets.

  • Park marks the second top-25 opponent Northwestern has defeated this season (#11 MidAmerica Nazarene).
  • The sweep streak, once again, improves up to seven-straight.

  • Alysen Dexter was the biggest offensive factor with 10 kills on the night.
  • Liv Reitsma led the team with 14 assists, Logan Miller notched six.
