Northwestern Dominance Continues on Day Two of Labor Day Classic

Alysen Dexter sets new program record for service aces in a match against Providence

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Utilizing the service ace, picking up a combined 27 on the day, the No. 3-ranked Northwestern College (9-0, 1-0 GPAC) continued to show their dominance on the court today to bring the 2023 College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic to a close with a pair of sweeps over Providence (Mont.) and The Master's (Calif.). Junior Alysen Dexter etches her name in the program's record book with 13 service aces against Providence to begin the day, ending with a total of 18 in the two matches combined.

MATCH 1: (3) Northwestern 3, (RV) Providence (Mont.) 0
The Red Raiders continued the momentum of Day 1 into the second day of the CSM Labor Day Classic with a dominant win over a solid University of Providence (Mont.) (7-4, 0-0 Frontier) squad.

The first set was a battle defined by runs by both sides. Northwestern jumped out to an early 11-3 and seemed to be well on their way to taking the first set with ease. However, after a side out, Providence put together a 12-3 run to race to a 15-14 advantage. Northwestern would not be rattled, taking seven of the next eight points, in which saw the service ace come into play for the Raiders. Kills from Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) and Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) would help Northwestern go onto take the first set 25-20.

Set two saw Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) take total control of the match with an absolute serving clinic. Northwestern was off and running from the first serve of the set, scoring the first nine points with a kill from Sterk that put the ball in the hands of Dexter who ripped off eight-straight service aces, picking on the Providence libero. The Argos were forced to use their second time out of the set trailing 16-5, but it was too little, too late. The final nine Raider points of the set to take it 25-12, came via four kills and multiple Providence service aces.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Alysen Dexter sets a new program record for most service aces by an individual in a match (13), topping the old record of 10.
  • The Raiders as a team put down 17 service aces, the second-highest amount of aces this season in a match (19 v. Langston); and the third double-digit service ace match of the season.
  • NWC hit just shy of .300 for the match (.294), recording 39 kills to UP's 21.
  • The Raiders also held the team edge in aces (17-5), blocks (7-5), assists (37-19), and digs (39-29).
  • Jazlin De Haan (12) and Savonne Sterk (10) paced the offense with double-digit kills.
  • Liv Reitsma picks up a season-high 25 assists, notching her fifth 20+ assist game of the year.
  • Olivia Granstra paced the backline with her 12 digs.

MATCH 2: (3) Northwestern 3, (RV) The Master's (Calif.) 0
The Red Raiders finished the Labor Day Classic on a very high note, dominating the Mustangs of The Master's University (Calif.) (9-4, 0-0 GSAC), holding the Mustangs to just 10 and 12 points, respectively, in the final two sets. Northwestern outhit TMU 0.284 to .009 on the match.

Much like in the match earlier against Providence, Northwestern jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Master's would respond with a run of their own and eventually taking a 14-12 lead. The two teams would trade points and be tied three times before Northwestern went on a four-point run to lead 22-17 and would put the set away, 25-20.

Set two started very similarly and in favor of NWC, as the Raiders took the first seven points and forcing a Mustangs time out. However, the break in the action would not slow down the Red Raiders. Northwestern would then utilize a 13-2 run to take the commanding 20-2 set lead. Only fittingly, a kill from the middle and Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) would give Northwestern the 25-10 and 20 match lead.

Northwestern would keep the pressure on the Mustangs early once again, a recipe that had worked up until that point and would continue to work well for the Raiders. Leading 10-4, the Mustangs would attempt to fight back but could never get over the hump. The Raiders would score seven of the last eight points to take the final set 25-12, behind five kills with a pair from De Haan and Macay Van't Hul (Jr., Rock Valley, Iowa).

MATCH NOTES:
  • Northwestern improves to 9-0 on the season, winning all nine matches in straight sets.
  • NWC hit above .300 in the first two sets of the match at .314 and .310, respectively.
  • The Raiders notch their fourth double-digit service aces as a team of the season with 10.
  • Alysen Dexter continued her serving clinic, again leading the team in aces with her five.
  • Jazlin De Haan led the offense with her 16 kills.
  • Zavyr Metzger was a menace at the net, recording seven blocks.
  • Olivia Granstra picks up her first 20+-dig match with 22 on the night.
Up Next: Northwestern returns to Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) action on Friday, September 8 when they play host to the No. 17-ranked Jimmies of the University of Jamestown (6-5, 0-0 GPAC) inside the Bultman Center.
