No. 3 NWC Opens GPAC Play with Three-Set Victory of Briar Cliff

De Haan records season-high 18 kills as Red Raiders win their seventh-straight GPAC opener

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – After moving up to No. 3 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) earlier today, the Northwestern College volleyball team (5-0, 1-0 GPAC) opened the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play with their fifth-straight sweep to start the season.
The league's leading attacker in kills per set in Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) continued to make her presence felt, starting early in tonight's match, as she recorded seven kills on her 10 attempts in the opening set. With Briar Cliff holding an early 3-2 advantage, an 11-3 Raider run with three kills from De Haan gave the Red Raiders the momentum needed to run off to a 25-18 first set victory.

Set two was highlighted by a 7-1 Red Raider run that practically put the set out of reach, giving NWC a 21-13 lead. After going the first set without a kill, the arm of Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) got going in set two with her putting down four kills. De Haan would also add five more of her own, bringing her match total up to 12 as the Raider's big arms proved to be too much for the Charger backline to handle.

Briar Cliff would continue to fight in the third set, despite being down 2-0 in the match. The Chargers would hop out to an early 6-3 advantage. After taking their largest lead of the match at four points (13-9), the Red Raiders would settle down and string together five-straight points to lead 14-13. A couple of kills from Dexter would set the momentum to finish off the match. Tied at 18-18, Northwestern would score seven of the last nine points. Needing just one more assist to make it four-straight matches with 20+ assists, sophomore Liv Reitsma (Papillion, Neb.) got her opportunity as she set up De Haan on the outside to lay down one more big swing, as the Red Raiders completed the sweep of the Chargers and took set three, 25-20.
