Service Aces Allows NWC to Make Quick Work of Langston

Liv Reitsma’s nine service aces sits second-most in a match in program history; team records 19

SEWARD, Neb. – The No. 5-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 GPAC) remains perfect through the second weekend of the season with their fourth-straight sweep to start the year, defeating the Lions of Langston University (Okla.) (1-4, 0-0 SAC). It was the serving that proved to be devastatingly effective in the sweep, as Liv Reitsma notches nine herself in the first set and the Red Raiders notch 19 as a team.
The fifth-ranked Red Raiders stormed out of the gates on the second day of the tournament, using a 7-0 run to start match against the Lions. Four service aces from Reitsma (So., Papillion, Neb.) set the tone of the match early for Northwestern. Langston put up minimal resistance in the first set as NWC dominated all facets of the contest. Later in the set, Reitsma continued to show off her serving skills with four more service aces to bring her match total up to eight, as the Red Raiders took set one, 25-8.

Offensively in the first set, it was Alysen Dexter (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) and Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) putting down three kills was just two less than the Lions had as a team in the set (7). The Red Raiders hit 0.429 and recorded nine team service aces in the first set.

The Lions would show a bit more fight in the second set, but Dexter would steal the show for the Red Raiders with the offense going through her in the middle. She jumped into the team lead in kills with nine through the first two sets of play. The story of the match through two sets was the Red Raider serving and big arms, as the Red Raiders hit .352 and holding the Lions to just a .057 percentage to take the demanding 2-0 lead, following the 25-12 second set win.

A quick 6-1 start for the Red Raiders made the third set get off on the right foot. The Lions would put up a fight, recording their match-best 18 points in the final set. The Red Raiders kept swinging well, putting down kills; while also notching even more service aces. Logan Miller (Fr., Jefferson, S.D.) would enter the service ace party in the final set with a pair of her own, as a grand total of eight different Raiders would record a service ace in the three set victory.
