Northwestern Downs No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene in Straight Sets

Sophomore setter Liv Reitsma notches 1,000th career assist

SEWARD, Neb. – The No. 5-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 GPAC) took care of business in their first top-25 matchup of the 2023 season with a straight-sets victory over No. 11-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (0-2, 0-0 HEART) at the Bulldog Bash. Sophomore setter Liv Reitsma notched her 1,000th career assist, notching the 20-assist mark in back-to-back matches.
A blistering .433 team hitting percentage in Seward to open the Bulldog Bash for the Red Raiders as Northwestern looked to take control of the match early. Jazlin De Haan (Jr., Orange City, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (Jr., Lynden, Wash.) paced the Red Raider attack as the team raced to a 25-16 first set victory.

Set two was a battle as the Pioneers looked to pick up their first set victory of the season, leading by four points early in the set. However, the Red Raiders would rattle off four-straight points to knot it up at 9-9 but would not take their first lead until it was 21-20 by way of a Pioneer attack error. It seemed like for every answer the Raiders tried to give to an MNU spurt, the Pioneers would keep the pressure on. But perseverance and a balanced attack would allow Northwestern to claw their way back. Late in the set, tied 22-22, Northwestern would rattle off three-straight points to take the set and lead the match 2-0. The set would be tied a total of six times throughout the tightly contest battle.

The third set was more of the same of the opening set. Leading 10-8 after a pair of MNU points, the Red Raiders rattled off five-straight to opening up a 15-8 lead and forcing the Pioneers to burn a timeout. In the run, aided by MNU hitting errors, the Raiders got kills from Zavyr Metzger (So., Larchwood, Iowa) and De Haan to take control of what would be the final set of the match.
