Red Raiders Battle; Fall to Concordia in GPAC Quarterfinals

Northwestern tallies wins at No. 1-3 in singles play

FREMONT, Neb. – After meeting each other on the NWC Tennis Courts earlier this week, the Northwestern College men's tennis team (9-10, 2-4 GPAC) would battle the Concordia University (Neb.) Bulldogs (12-8, 3-3 GPAC) and it would come down to the wire in the 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Quarterfinal match.

The Bulldogs would take the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. As on Monday, the duo of Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) and Arthur Vincente (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded the victory at No. 2 with another 6-4 win.

Northwestern would pick up huge singles victories at Nos. 1-3, as the match would be decided in the No. 6 singles match with it tied up at 3-3.

Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) got the momentum on NWC's side early on in his first set with Eduardo Rojas, taking it six games to three. He would keep the pressure on in the second set, picking up the first win of the day in singles for Northwestern with a dominant 6-0 decision.

At the No. 2 flight, David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) had a battle with Santiago Abadia of Concordia, ultimately pulling out seven games to five victory in the first set. He would go on to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and would clinch the second Raider point of the morning with a 6-1 set two victory, giving NWC the 2-1 match lead.

In another tightly contested first set, Vincente would battle Manuel Rodriguez Berduo to a 6-6 decision, though it would be Concordia pulling out the 7-6(8-6) first set win. Rodriguez Berduo would continue to use that first set momentum, taking the second set 6-0 and evening the match at 2-2.

In a huge third match point victory for the Red Raiders, VandenBerg came out of the gates hot with a 6-1 set one victory over CUNE's Hugo Fuentes at No. 1 singles. Fuentes would pull even in the second set, taking it 6-2. In the third set, VandenBerg would jump out to the 2-1 game lead and would clinch with a 6-3 win.

Noah Roisum (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) would fall to Concordia's Thomas van Haaren in the first set, 6-1. Though he would battle in the second set, van Haaren would take set two, 6-4.

It would come down to Collin Harmelink (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Juan Rabellino to decide the match at No. 6 singles, as the match was knotted up at 3-3. Rabellino would go on to win in straight sets – 6-3, 6-1.
