PREVIEW: Men's Tennis GPAC Tournament

Red Raiders and Bulldogs clash at 9:00 a.m. in the quarterfinals

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament has arrived and the Northwestern College men's tennis team (9-9, 2-4 GPAC) will make the trip down to the Fremont YMCA in Fremont, Neb. for the tournament set for Friday-Saturday, April 28-29.
 
The Red Raiders earned the No. 5-seed in this year's tournament after posting a 2-4 record in league play this season. They will face the Concordia University (Neb.) Bulldogs in the Quarterfinals at 9:00 a.m.
 
On the season, Northwestern picked up league wins over the Hastings Broncos (6-1) and the No. 6-seed Mount Marty Lancers (4-3).
 
QUARTERFINAL MATCHUP
The Red Raiders and the Bulldogs will be meeting for the second time this week, as the two teams concluded the regular season on Monday, April 24 in Orange City. Concordia won the regular season meeting, 6-1. David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) picked up the win at No. 2 singles for Northwestern in the match. The full box score can be found linked above.

SEASON STATS
Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) leads the team this season with his 10 singles victories (10-8) with eight of his wins coming at the No. 3 position (8-7) and two at No. 4 (2-1). Bomgaars enters the league tournament with a 9-9 singles record on the season with most of his matches being played at No. 2. Playing nearly all his matches at No. 4, freshman Arthur Vincente (Sao Paulo, Brazil) enters with an 8-10 record (7-8 at No. 4).
 
On the doubles side, the duo of Bomgaars and Costa have paced the team with their 11 wins (11-7) as a duo, as the two played every doubles match together. Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) and Vincente enter with a 9-6 mark as a pair, playing all their matches at No. 2. Additionally, VandenBerg also has 11 doubles wins in total this season.
 
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Under the direction of head coach Monte Tilgner, it marks the second-straight season the Red Raiders have earned a berth to the GPAC tournament. In his first season leading the program (2019-20), the season was canceled due to Covid-19.

Up Next: The winner of the quarterfinal match will go on to play the winner of No. 1-seed Midland, who received a bye into the semifinal round. The championship game is set to be played at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.
