Long Ball Leads to GPAC Road Split at Dakota Wesleyan

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Northwestern College baseball team (18-21, 11-9 GPAC) traveled to South Dakota for a much better day for baseball, splitting the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) doubleheader with the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers (5-27, 2-18 GPAC). The Raiders blasted a season-high four home runs in the Game 2 victory.

How It Happened
Hits were hard to come by for either side through the first four innings, a combined two between the two teams. The two teams would then erupt for eight total runs in the fifth inning, in favor of Dakota Wesleyan, as the Tigers would go on to take the seven-inning Game 1, 7-3.

Noa Vogel (Sr., Castle Pines, Colo.) got Northwestern on the board first with a two-out solo home run to left center field in the top half of the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie.

The second Red Raider run came in the fifth after a lead-off double from Colby Shelton (So., Urbandale, Iowa). Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would lay down a bunt to push Shelton to third, but a throwing error would allow Shelton to come into score and make it 2-0 NWC.

Dakota Wesleyan would draw even with one swing of the bat of their own, as Daulton Wilcoxen would drive a ball to left center field, knotting it at two runs apiece. The Tigers would keep the pressure on in the fifth, putting runners on first and second with just one out, while a wild pitch would advance both runners into scoring position. A balk call would then give DWU their first lead of the game at 3-2, followed by an RBI single to double their lead (4-2). After a pair of pitching changes, the Tigers would ultimately plate seven runs in the home half of the fifth to jump out to the 7-2 lead.

Northwestern showed some fight in the next half inning. For the second-straight inning a Raider opened the inning with a double, this time Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) doing the honors. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Vogel would drive him in with an RBI single to left field, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

Game Notes
  • NWC homered for the 18th time this season and the first big fly since the Waldorf game (April 4).

How It Happened
It was the long ball that propelled Northwestern to split the doubleheader, blasting four total in Game 2 as they take the game 7-1, behind a stout six inning outing from sophomore Drew Dykstra.

Northwestern got off to a fast start in the second game, after the first two batters of the game Northwestern already led 2-0. Evan Olesen (Sr., Estherville, Iowa) led off the game with an infield single to second, followed by a two-run home run from Cullinan. The home run marked 100 career RBIs in a Northwestern uniform for Cullinan.

The Tigers would plate a run to cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the first inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly.

In the second inning, following a two-out single from Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.), junior Ethan Buckner (Aurora, Colo.) would blast his first home run of his college career, extending the NWC lead to 4-1. It would be the Red Raiders the rest of the way.

The fourth inning was highlighted by a pair of solo home runs from Mo Watson (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) and Rash, extending the NWC lead to 6-1. It marks the first home run of the season for Rash and second for Watson. The final run came in the sixth inning as an error by the Tiger centerfielder allowed Bryce Click (Fr., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) to come into score.

Game Notes
  • Ethan Buckner hit his first-career home run and tallied his second multi-RBI game of the season.
  • With the four home runs – the most since the Midland game last season (also 4 HR) – Northwestern's home run total up to 22 on the season.
  • With his hit in Game 2, Evan Olesen sets a new career-high for hits in a season (24).
  • Kip Cullinan went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBI. It's his 21st career home run.
  • Eli Rash hit his first home run of the season, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
  • Both Noa Vogel and Evan Olesen both worked walks in Game 2.
  • Drew Dykstra (3-4) tied his season-high in innings pitched (6.0) and his second-lowest hits allowed mark (3), and not surrendering an earned run for the third time this season.
  • He tallied seven strikeouts, which sits second-best for him on the year.
  • Brady Nicolet, making his 12th appearance of the season, pitched the seventh inning and did not allow a hit.
