Northwestern Puts Up a Fight at South Dakota State

Mason Porepp leads the offense and notches his 100th career hit as a Red Raider

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Northwestern College baseball team (18-22, 11-9 GPAC) hit the road for their final midweek game of the season against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I foe South Dakota State (14-17, 7-5 SUMMIT). Though scoring the most runs against the Jackrabbits of any National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Raiders would fall 19-11.

How It Happened
The two teams would utilize their bullpens heavily in the midweek clash at Erv Heuther Field in Brookings, as the two teams combined to use 11 arms, and combining for 30 runs and 28 hits on the day in the three and a half hour affair.

Brad Tornow (Jr., Kalona, Iowa) made his first start of the 2023 season, shutting down the Jackrabbits through his three innings of work. He allowed just two hits and did not allow an SDSU run, as the Jacks were held scoreless through the first three innings.

The SDSU bats came alive in the fourth inning, as they put up an 11-spot on the board. Though Northwestern would fight back, it would be enough. The Red Raiders first got on the board in the sixth inning with three runs as Drew Dykstra (So., Urbandale, Iowa). An RBI single from TJ Silliman (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) to shortstop would make it 11-3 SDSU.

The following inning would be a big seven-run frame for Northwestern. Mason Porepp (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Iowa) would go deep for the fourth time this season on an 0-2 pitch, driving in three runs. A seeing eyes single from Ethan Buckner (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) would plate a run while the final runs would come in via a Jackrabbit throwing error. Heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Red Raiders had cut it to a 12-10 game.

However, South Dakota State would respond with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, distancing themselves for what would be the final time. The two teams would exchange a run in the eighth inning, as a wild pitch would plate Isaac Short (Fr., Grimes, Iowa) for the final NWC run of the game.
