NWC Drops Home GPAC Clash to (RV) Midland

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (9-7, 2-2 GPAC) battled a tough (RV) Midland University (11-7, 2-0 GPAC) squad on their home tennis courts, dealing with Mother Nature's delay, falling 7-0 to the Warriors on Friday afternoon. Despite the score, the Red Raiders battled hard against a solid Warriors squad.

The Warriors began the match after the lightning delay, taking all three doubles clashes to take the early 1-0 lead into singles play. Though the Warriors won all three, the duo of David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) and Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) at No. 1 would battle to a 6-3 decision.

In singles play, Midland would sweep the six spots but multiple Raiders would put up competitive fights in their respective matches. At No. 1, Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) battled Midland's Ryosei Masuda to a tough 7-5, 7-6(7-4). Bomgaars would force Ben Starman to take the second set 7-5, after falling 2-6 in the first. Costa fought hard, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Nunzio Thiel.

Up Next: The Raiders will hit the road for a GPAC clash at Morningside next Thursday, April 20 in Sioux City, Iowa with first serve slated for 4:30 p.m.
