Women's Tennis Earns Win in GPAC Opening Weekend

Vandersall extends singles streak to six matches

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Northwestern women's tennis team (6-7, 1-1 GPAC) took a split on the opening weekend of Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play, defeating Hastings on the road 4-3 on Saturday morning.

In a match that saw both sides hold their own, the Raiders took a slight edge, winning two out of the three doubles matches and splitting in singles. Olya Furmanova (Fr., Minsk, Belarus) earned the win in the No. 1 spot in a third set tiebreaker, while Julia Kutz (So., Sheridan, Wyo.) and Wynne Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa) took convincing wins in No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. The win for Vandersall marked her eighth of the year and sixth consecutive.

In doubles, Furmanova and Vandersall won 6-3 and Ainslie Robinson (So., Luverne, Minn.) and Hannah Beckloff (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.) broke the tie to give Northwestern the team point.

"It was a hard-fought match that could have swung either way," said head coach Jamie De Jong. "There is growth happening."

Up Next: Northwestern's busy start to the conference season will continue at Mount Marty on Monday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Yankton, South Dakota.
