Raiders Drop Two to Roosevelt in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Northwestern College baseball team (3-9, 0-0 GPAC) dropped a pair of games to the Lakers of Roosevelt University (Ill.) (9-4, 0-0 CCAC) on Day 2 of the Spring Break trip to Florida.

GAME 1: Roosevelt 8, Northwestern 7

Pitching Decisions
Win: Omar Abuelhija (2-0)
Loss: Dylan Kirkeby (1-2)
Save: Connor Houlahan (2)

How It Happened
Both teams wasted no time putting runs on the board to start the day, both putting up four runs in the first inning. As the designated visiting team in the first game, the Lakers plated four to start the contest, as all four runs would be scored via RBI singles.

Northwestern would respond with four runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Kip Cullinan (Sr., Urbdandale, Iowa) would notch an RBI single to drive in the first Raider run. Mo Watson (INFO) would also single to right field, and an error in the outfield would allow two more Raider runs to cross the plate, making it 4-3. Mason Porepp (INFO) would lay down a bunt that would score Watson to even the contest up at 4-4.

The following inning, Cullinan would notch his second RBI single of the day, scoring Ethan Buckner (INFO), to give NWC their first lead of the game at 5-4.

The score would hold steady until the fifth inning, when a Red Raider defensive miscue would allow the tying run to come home. Roosevelt would pick up three more runs, proving to be enough to hold onto win, in the sixth inning.

Despite trailing by three entering the seventh and final inning, the Red Raiders would show some fight. Laker miscues would ultimately allow a pair of NWC runs to score, making 8-7 but the Lakers would hold on to win by that score.

Game Notes
  • Kip Cullinan tallies his third multiple RBI game of the season with his two RBIs in Game 1, going 2-for-4.
  • Cullinan and Evan Olesen both tally two hits in the contest as Olesen extends his on-base streak to eight games total on the day.
  • Dylan Kirkeby (1-2) threw five full innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven Lakers.
  • Brady Nicolet and Shane Geurink both made appearances in relief.

GAME 2: Roosevelt 8, Northwestern 4

How It Happened
As the visiting team in Game 2, Northwestern would again strike for multiple runs to start the game with their first at-bat. The Raiders would plate three first inning runs, as Porepp and Sam Stanford (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up RBIs.

It would be Roosevelt who would then score eight unanswered runs to take control of the game. The Lakers would plate one in the bottom half of the first, as each team recorded at least one run in the first inning of both games on the day.

A three-run home run for the Lakers in the second inning would give them the lead at 4-3, as they would tack on one more in the frame with an RBI single which would prove to be the game-winning tally. They would then tack one run on in the third and two more in the fourth, jumping out to an 8-3 advantage.

An RBI triple for Eli Rash (Jr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.) in the sixth would score Jacob Kindhart (Sr., Shawnee, Kan.), to make the final score end up being 8-4.

Game Notes
  • Both Mo Watson and Jacob Kindhart picked up multi-hit games with two hits each, as Watson now has two multi-hit games on the season.
  • NWC outhit Roosevelt 9-6 in the game.
  • On the mound, it proved to be a pitch by committee game, as four different Raiders made appearances on the mound.
Up Next: Northwestern will have an off day tomorrow, before battling the top-ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and undefeated Southeastern University (Fla.) (22-0, 0-0 SUN) in a single-game on Thursday, March 9.
