Vandersall Keeps Singles Winning Streak Alive, but Raiders Drop GPAC Opener

Vandersall finishes March 5-0 in singles, 4-1 in doubles

CRETE, Neb. – Wynne Vandersall was the lone Raider winner as Northwestern fell in the conference opener today, 6-1 at Doane.

In a match that was moved indoors to Doane's Fuhrer Fieldhouse to accommodate the weather, the home Tigers held a firm advantage, sweeping the doubles matches and winning all but one of the singles bouts.

Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa) won her seventh singles match of the season and fifth consecutive, winning 6-2 in set one and taking the tiebreaker set 10-8. She finished the month of March undefeated in singles and 4-1 in doubles.

The Raiders still held close in the rest of the singles, however, as the No. 1 match between Olya Furmanova (Fr., Minsk, Belarus) and Doane's Ava Macke came down to 7-5 and 6-4 decisions. Julia Kutz (So., Sheridan, Wyo.) also came down to the wire in her first set, losing by a score of 7-6, and Ainslie Robinson (So., Luverne, Minn.) picked up five games in her second set.

Up Next: The Raiders continue GPAC play against Hastings tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in Hastings, Nebraska.
