Men's Tennis Opens GPAC Play with a 6-1 Victory Over Hastings

David Bomgaars and Leandro Costa record 10th doubles win of the season

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (8-5, 1-0 GPAC) opened the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) slate Friday afternoon in the state of Nebraska, picking up a 6-1 dominant win over the Broncos of Hastings College (1-9, 0-2 GPAC) to start the weekend.

Northwestern opened the match with a sweep in doubles play, using the traditional line-up of the last few matches. With their 6-3 wins at No. 1, David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) and Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) tally their 10th double win of the season for the Red Raiders.

The first three singles matches, No. 1-3, were relatively quick and resulted in three Northwestern victories, doing so securing the victory, leading 4-0 at the time. Costa, defeating Hastings' Thane Waite (6-2, 6-4), tallies his team-leading eighth victory of the season, improving to 8-3. Five of those wins now coming at the No. 3 slot, including the victory today.

At No. 2, Bomgaars sits not far behind Costa, tallying his seventh win of the season (7-4) with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Ryan Hunter. Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1.

Rounding out the victories were Arthur Vincente (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) (6-2, 6-4) at No. 3 and Collin Harmelink (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6.

Up Next: Northwestern will remain in the state of Nebraska for a Saturday GPAC clash with the Tigers of Doane University (6-10, 1-0 GPAC) tomorrow afternoon in Crete, Neb.
