SAINT PETER, Minn. – In a weekend where they saw opponents from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ranks, Northwestern (3-6, 0-0 GPAC) split their outings, winning 9-1 on Friday night and dropping an 8-1 decision on Saturday.
MATCH 1: NWC 9, Bethany Lutheran 0
Julia Kutz (So., Sheridan, Wyo.), Wynne Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa), and Hannah Beckloff (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.) each won their sets by a score of 6-0 in Northwestern's convincing win over Bethany Lutheran (Minn.). The Raiders received a great all-around team performance on Friday night, only dropping a total of eight official games, while sweeping the total sets in singles. They also continued their winning ways in doubles play, as Kutz and Julia Anderson (So., Rapid City, S.D.) and the doubles squad of Beckloff and Ainslie Robinson (So., Luverne, Minn.) each won 8-1. Vandersall and Olya Furmanova (Fr., Minsk, Belarus) won 8-3 in their doubles outing.
MATCH 2: Gustavus Adolphus 8, NWC 1
The Raiders faced a tough test in Gustavus Adolphus on the second day of their trip to Minnesota, as they dropped an 8-1 contest.
Vandersall got the point for the Raiders, winning 10-1 in the third set after coming back from a 7-6 loss in set one. She also won the second set 6-4. Furmanova gave her opponent a run as well, only falling by two games in the second set of her singles match.
The doubles team of Kutz and Anderson pushed Gustavus Adolphus to a tiebreaker set but were unable to record the win.
