How It Happened
The Raiders overcame a two-run deficit on Saturday against Valley City State University (VCSU), as a walk-off RBI single from Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) sent Northwestern to its 22nd win of the season.

Both teams were left scoreless through the first two innings before the Vikings got on the board in the top of the third. A two-run home run to center with a runner on third gave VCSU an early 2-0 advantage.

The Raiders were kept at zero runs until the sixth when Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) sent Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) home from second, hitting a double that cut the deficit in half. Northwestern then tied it in the next at-bat as Chloe Gallegos singled and brought Strasser in from second with two outs away.

After the game entered extra innings knotted at 2-2, VCSU took the lead on an RBI groundout, going up 3-2 in the top of the eighth.

With one more chance to get out with a win, Northwestern took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule, as Mikkelsen brought Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) across the plate in the leadoff spot of the eighth. Following a wild pitch and a flyout, Gallegos came through again, ending the game with a single into left field.

Game Notes
  • Chloe Gallegos was effective at the plate, driving in two runs on two hits.
  • Gwen Mikkelsen went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) had her seventh complete-game of the year, striking out eight batters and not issuing a walk.

"Gwen, Emily, and Chloe were a part of all our runs today," said head coach Shane Bouman. "We did a great job trusting our plan and finally made it pay off. Kameryn has also been so tough in the circle for us."
Up Next: Northwestern will have one final game in Tucson, facing the Viterbo (Wis.) V-Hawks on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
