How It Happened
Strong offense in the first and fourth innings led the Raiders to a win over Viterbo today, as Northwestern won 9-1 in five innings at Tucson's Lincoln Park.

The Raiders did not waste any time being aggressive offensively, as the first inning saw Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) stealing second and then scoring on an error after a single by Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.). After Mikkelsen scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat, Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) followed up a double from Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), putting the Raiders ahead 3-0.

Although the V-Hawks put up a hit in each inning, Northwestern limited Viterbo's opportunities on offense, while also adding to their lead. Mikkelsen drove in one of her three RBI in the second, bringing Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) home from second.

Northwestern added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Mikkelsen getting involved once again. Her two-out double scored two baserunners, while Strasser then hit an RBI double in the cleanup spot.

Despite Viterbo getting their first run on the board in the top of the fifth, the Raiders ended the game with the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom half of the inning, as Billings singled with two runners in scoring position, scoring one. Grotewold then reached on an error, bringing a run home and ending the game.

With the win, Northwestern closed the Tucson Invitational Games with a record of 7-2.
