Red Raiders Tripped Up in South Dakota

NWC welcomes Mount Marty on Saturday for Senior Day

MITCHELL, S.D. – Two evenly matched Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) squads met inside the World's Only Corn Palace Wednesday evening in a crucial league clash, as the (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (17-8, 12-7 GPAC) fell to the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University (18-7, 12-7 GPAC), 55-41.

Dakota Wesleyan struck first with a basket on the opening possession, as both teams would go cold missing the next nine shots from the floor combined. Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) would put the Red Raiders on the board with a pair of free throws, knotting the game up at 2-2 nearly halfway through the first quarter. The first field goal of the game would come via a 3-pointer from Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa), cutting the DWU lead down to one at 6-5. After DWU hit a three on the ensuing possession, Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) hit her first three of the game to knot the game up at 8-8. The Tigers would hold a slight 11-10 advantaged after the first quarter of play.

The Tigers put up the first six points of the second quarter, extending their lead up to seven (17-10) before Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) finished a nice drive to the basket. DWU would continue to grow their lead with a pair of 3-pointers, leading 23-12 with five minutes to go in the half. Northwestern would chip into the deficit with three-straight unanswered baskets of their own as Danner had four of the six points. A Schany would cut the lead down to four and a Jones and-one drive would eventually cut it down to two, capping a 10-1 Red Raider run.

Dakota Wesleyan would take a two-point, 26-24, lead into halftime break. Danner was tied for the game-high with seven first half points and snagging six rebounds. Jones was likewise busy, recording six points and notching three steals.

DWU, again, used a small spurt to open the second half with four-straight points. Hannah Nerem (Sr., Edgerton, Minn.) notched the first Red Raider points of the third quarter, making it 30-26. Jones continued to attack the hoop with another and-one opportunity, cutting the Tiger lead to 30-29. While immediately after, a Danner steal and lay-up gave Northwestern their first lead of the contest at 31-30. The Tigers would go on a 6-0 spurt to regain the momentum in front of the home crowd. Jones was the first Raider to double digits, thanks to a beautiful find from Danner on the cut, making it 36-35 with just under three minutes to play in the quarter. With a minute to play in the frame, Northwestern would make another push and, once again, keep the game within one possession with the Tigers leading 39-37.

Schany would tie the game up at 39-39 with a reverse lay-up with the first basket of the final quarter of play. Dakota Wesleyan would respond with a 16-2 run to end the game, sealing the Tiger victory in front of the home crowd, 55-41.

GAME NOTES:
  • Maddie Jones paced the team with her 13 points and four steals.
  • Emilee Danner contributed nine points and six rebounds in the effort.
  • DWU shot 40.0% from the field while the Raiders shot 35.4%.
  • NWC falls to 8-4 on the road this season and to 17-8 overall.
