Conference Tournament Race Heats Up This Week for the Raiders

Northwestern set to honor five seniors on Saturday inside the Bultman Center

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (17-7, 12-6 GPAC) conference tournament seeding push continues this week, as the Red Raiders currently sit in fourth-place in the league standings – tied with Concordia (Neb.). The Raiders open the week with a trip to Mitchell, S.D. to battle the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan, who sit fifth in the league. On Saturday, Northwestern is set to host Mount Marty for senior day inside the Bultman Center.

(Note: new rankings released on Wednesday morning (Feb. 8) saw NWC drop out of the top-25, and receiving 15 votes).

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • NAIA TOP-20: free throw percentage (4th), FG% (7th), and Assists/Game (16th).
  • Emilee Danner took the team lead with her fourth double-double against Morningside, Schany is close behind with her three.
  • The Raiders have held 12 opponents this season to under 40% shooting from the floor, improving to 12-0 in those games.
  • Northwestern has shot 50% or better from the floor in SIX games this season.
  • Molly Schany erupted for 24 points in the win over Doane last time out, marking her fourth 20-point game of the season for the Rede Raiders.   
  • Northwestern sits second in the GPAC in field goal percentage (47.1), opponents FG% (38.8), and blocks per game (2.9), while sitting third in free throw percentage (77.6).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures still this season entering the 2023 calendar year: Molly Schany (14.5), Maddie Jones (13.9), and Emilee Danner (10.2).

  • Northwestern is set to celebrate four seniors on Senior Day, this Saturday, February 11 when the Lancers of Mount Marty come to town.

  WHAT'S AT STAKE?
  • As the GPAC tournament nears, the race for seeding in the tournament picks up in intensity.
  • NWC enters the day in fourth-place in the GPAC (12-6), tied with CUNE.
  • Dordt still leads the GPAC at 17-1.
  • Jamestown at Briar Cliff on Saturday will be a huge game, as both teams battle for second-place in the league. The Jimmies sits at 14-4, while the Chargers sit 13-5 in third.
IN GOOD COMPANY
  • 236 NAIA schools sponsor women's basketball…NWC sits top-45 in five different statistical categories.
  • The Raiders are top-10 in free throw percentage (4th) and field goal percentage (7th).
  • NWC is top-45 in assists per game (19th), 3-point percentage (25th), rebounding margin (T37th) and points per game (41st) this season.
MAKING THE FREE THROWS COUNT
  • Two Red Raiders are shooting 80+% from the free throw line this season (min. 25 att.).
  • NWC sits fourth in the NAIA in free throw percentage (77.6%), which sits second in the GPAC.
  • Maddie Jones leads the way at 85.8% (103-120) and she has attempted the most on the team, eclipsing the 100-attempt mark in the game against Concordia (Neb.) on Jan. 21.
  • Jones eclipsed the 100 made free throws mark in the win over the College of Saint Mary on Feb. 1.
  • Jones sits with the second most attempts in the GPAC, behind Doane's Hatcliff (208) and she sits third in the league in FT% (min. 50 attempts) – behind Briar Cliff's Konnor Sudmann (86.2) and Doane's Rylie Rice (86.0).
TOP-LEVEL TEAM DEFENSE
  • NWC holds opponents to a mere 39.2% field goal percentage and 61.8 points per game, which sits fifth and fourth in the GPAC, respectively.
  • 12 times this season, NWC has held opponents to sub-40% shooting from the floor and are a perfect 12-0 in those games.
RECORD BREAKERS!
  • Northwestern could not miss in the first road win over Morningside since 2018, shooting a new single-game program record of 72.2% from the floor (39-for-54).
  • NWC separated themselves from the Mustangs in the third quarter, shooting a phenomenal 14-for-15 (93.3%).
  • It breaks the previous record of 67.7% (42-of-62) set against Missouri Baptist in the 2011-12 season. NWC won 103-60 on December 29, 2011.
SERIES HISTORY – DAKOTA WESLEYAN
  • The meetings marks the second one in as many weeks, as DWU took the win in Orange City last week, 73-64.
  • Northwestern holds the all-time series lead, 39-22 in the 61 all-time meetings.
  • Head coach Kristin Rotert looks for her first win over DWU (0-3).
SERIES HISTORY – MOUNT MARTY
  • Northwestern won the first meeting in Yankton by the score of 80-63 back in early January, behind 17 points from Hali Anderson.
  • The Raiders are an impressive 59-22 against the Lancers in series history, winning nearly 73% of the games.
  • Rotert is a perfect 3-0 against the Lancers in her career at NWC.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
  • Once again, DWU sits just a game behind the Red Raiders in sixth-place in the league standings entering the second meeting of the season.
  • On the season, the Tigers sit 17-7 overall and enter on a top-25 road win over No. 18 Briar Cliff on Saturday (89-71).
  • DWU has seen more success on the road this season (9-3), compared to their 5-4 record in front of the home crowd.
  • Three Tigers enter the week averaging double digits per game, led by senior Jada Campbell who notches 14.8 points per game, as she also leads the league with her 1.5 blocks per contest.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
  • Mount Marty has seen improvements this season, under the direction of first-year head coach Allan Bertram.
  • The Lancers have already doubled their league win total from last season with four on the year, entering 4-14 GPAC and 7-17 overall.
  • MMU is led by leading scorer Eve Millar, who averages 10.3 points per game. She also grabs a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game and sits second on the team with her 1.8 assists per contest.
  • Kaity Hove paces the team with her 2.2 assists per game for the Lancers.
Up Next: Northwestern will host their final regular season home game next Wednesday when No. 4-ranked Dordt comes to town, before heading to Hastings, Neb. to battle the Broncos on Saturday, February 18.
