Raiders Face Tough Competition to Open Spring Season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern women's tennis team returned to the court on Friday, playing a pair of matches at the First Serve Tennis Center in Sioux City. The matches were close, although the Raiders fell by one point in each outing.

Match 1
Northwestern opened the day with a close loss to Grand View, dropping a 4-3 match in Sioux City.

The Raiders took the doubles point, as the duos of Olya Furmanova (Fr., Minsk, Belarus) and Wynne Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa), and Hannah Beckloff (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.) and Ainslie Robinson (So., Luverne, Minn.) won their respective matches.

In singles play, Julia Anderson (So., Rapid City, S.D.) took the tiebreaker in the first set and won 7-4 in set two to win her match, while Vandersall moved to 2-1 in singles play on the season with a 6-0 sweep in the first and only set over Grand View's Paige Adams.

Grand View, however, won four of the six singles battles to achieve the slight advantage they needed to win the dual.

"We lost to two good teams," said head coach Jamie De Jong. "But we didn't go down without a fight.  These duals could have gone either way. We matched up well. It was a good experience, and we learned some things to work on. This Raider team has shown growth over the last season. We will see both of these teams again this spring."

Up Next: The Raiders will return to the court next week, facing Iowa Central Community College on Saturday, February 11. The match is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. at the First Serve Tennis Center in Sioux City.
