Molly Schany Paces Northwestern to 86-73 Win Over Doane

Maddie Jones notches her 150th career steal in the win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 20-ranked Northwestern College women's basketball team (16-7, 11-6 GPAC) completed their third Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) sweep of the season with an 86-73 win over the Doane Tigers (13-11, 7-11 GPAC) behind 24 points from Molly Schany.

In the win, Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) becomes the third Red Raider this season to join the 150 steals club, after notching two. She joins Taylor VanderVelde (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Emilee Danner (Sr., Westside, Iowa) and becomes the 26th member of the club.

"Great effort from our team today to wrap up a long stretch of games. Molly (Schany) played great and was a big presence for us inside," noted head coach Kristin Rotert." She finished a lot of tough shots and really helped us establish our offense."

Northwestern jumped out to a 26-13 lead in the first quarter, as seven different Raiders put points on the board, led by eight from Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa). Both Schany and VanderVelde shared the ball in the opening quarter, finding open teammates, as each notched three assists. The Raiders shot lights out in the frame, hitting 11 of their 17 shots for a 64.7% mark from the floor.

Doane attempted to chip their way back into the game in the second quarter, cutting the lead down to 41-37 with just under three minutes to play in the half. However, the Raiders would manage to take a seven-point lead into the locker room (47-40) after Maddie Portwine nailed a three for the last bucket of the second quarter.

"As a team, we did a great job on the offensive glass and created a lot of second chance opportunities for our offense," concluded Rotert.

Near the end of the third quarter, the Red Raiders began to flex their muscles as they built up a 15-point lead and would lead 70-55 heading into the fourth quarter. Northwestern would score the final five points of the third quarter, highlighted by a three-pointer from Kylie Foss (Fr., Brandon, S.D.).

NWC would keep the pressure on in the final quarter, flirting with a 20-point lead a couple of times, but most importantly not allowing the Tigers to chip and claw their way back late. The Raiders would pick up their ninth win in front of the home crowd, improving to 9-4 in the 13 home games, with an 86-73 win.
