Out to Best Start in Program History, Raider Softball Sweeps in Sioux Center

Head coach Shane Bouman earns 400th career win

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Northwestern softball team (16-0, 0-0 GPAC) is now out to their best start in program history after defeating Avila (Mo.) (7-4, 0-0 KCAC) and Waldorf (Iowa) (2-5, 0-0 Heart) in the final day of the Dordt Dome Classic in Sioux Center.

"Coach always says the toughest team wins and we did just that," said junior pitcher/outfielder Kameryn Etherington. "We played hard and had each other's backs. Go Raiders!"

How It Happened
Shane Bouman tallied his 400th career win and led the Raiders to their best start in program history in the first game of the day at the American State Bank Sports Complex, a 10-0 shutout of Avila (Mo.).

The Raiders opened with three runs in the first, one of four multi-run innings in the game. With runners on first and second, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) drove the first run across out of the cleanup spot, hitting an RBI single to left to put her team ahead. The next two at-bats also spelled success for Northwestern, as Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) opened her great day as a two-way player with an RBI single. Strasser then scored on the second out of the inning, a sacrifice fly from Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.).

Northwestern added two more in the top of the third, as Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) by way of a bunt single, stolen base, and fielder's choice. Etherington later drove in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly that sent Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) home.

Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) was dealing in the circle, only allowing one hit through the first five innings. The Raider offense added to her lead as Mikkelsen hit a two-out RBI single with the bases loaded to make the score 7-0.

The Raiders added three additional runs to their total in the seventh, securing a 10-0 neutral-site victory.

How It Happened
Despite Waldorf holding it close for the first three innings, Northwestern pulled away in the fourth and fifth innings to close out the month of February with a 6-0 win.

Emily Strasser, continuing a successful day in the cleanup spot, got the Raiders on the board right away in the top of the first, getting a groundout RBI after Jennifer Boeve and Madysn Grotewold opened up the game with singles, making the score 1-0 after the first.

Maddie Kvatek put Northwestern back in the scoring column in the fourth, using a double to center to send Jewel Bergstrom (Fr., Boyden, Iowa) home and give the Raiders a 2-0 advantage. In the following at-bat, Kvatek used heads-up baserunning to score on an errant throw, pushing the lead to 3-0.

The Northwestern lead extended to five runs in the fifth, as Gwen Mikkelsen continued her impressive streak at the plate, doubling to bring home Grotewold and Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa).

In the sixth inning, with her team leading by six, Kameryn Etherington kept the shutout alive, striking out two batters and getting a groundout after surrendering a leadoff triple. Again in the seventh, after giving up a one-out base hit, Etherington set the final two batters down on strikes, compiling 13 strikeouts on the day.

Game Notes

"Today were great team wins," commented junior shortstop Madysn Grotewold. "Our focus was on being mentally tough on defense and at the plate, and focusing on how we play as a team. Our team wins together, not caring who gets the credit, which makes it a fun atmosphere to be in."

Up Next: The Raiders will have a week off before heading to Tucson, Arizona for the Tucson Invitational Games. Their first day will be Monday, March 6, facing St. Francis (Ill.) and Siena Heights (Mich.).
