Softball Splits on First Day in Tucson

Raiders fall for first time this season, pick up shutout in Game 2

TUCSON, Ariz. – Northwestern's (17-1, 0-0 GPAC) historic winning streak to begin the season was snapped in Game 1 of today's Tucson Invitational Games, as the Raiders split softball action on Monday in Arizona.

How It Happened
For the first time this season, Northwestern suffered a loss, this time at the hands of St. Francis (Ill.) (6-1, 0-0 CCAC).

The Fighting Saints opened up the top half of the first with a two-run frame, as a sacrifice fly and an RBI single with runners in scoring position helped them open up an early lead.

Northwestern was set down in order in their half of the first, an important note as the Raiders are 8-0 when scoring in the first inning.

The next runs were put on the board by St. Francis in the fourth. With the bases loaded and two away, a single to left sent two runs across before a 2-RBI triple added another two runs to extend their lead to 6-0.

The Raiders threatened in the fifth as Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) and Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) both recorded hits and ended up in scoring position, although the Saints' Jordon Closs got out of the inning with consecutive flyouts.

Northwestern's first run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth, as a leadoff single by Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) and a Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) walk set up Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) to bring Boeve home from first. The Raiders, however, would leave the bases loaded to end the inning and end a potential comeback attempt.

How It Happened
Northwestern bounced back with a win, using an offensive explosion and solid pitching to pick up a 12-0 win over Siena Heights (Mich.) (3-6, 0-0 WHAC) and move to 17-1 on the year.

The Raiders struck in the second inning as Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) hit a bunt single with runners on the corners to go up 1-0.

After three scoreless innings for both teams, Northwestern added four in the top of the fifth. Jennifer Boeve hit a ground ball single that allowed Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa) to score and double the lead to 2-0. In the next at-bat, Gwen Mikkelsen blasted her third home run of the season to left field, a two-run shot that extended the Raider lead to four. Later in the inning, Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) notched a pinch-hit double that scored Emily Strasser and made the score 5-0.

The Raiders put the game away in the seventh, using another big inning that was sparked by bases-loaded RBI single from Gallegos, her second RBI of the game. With two outs in the inning, Northwestern walked in a run, while Ashtyn Billings doubled to left to drive in two runs and make it 9-0. A Grotewold single followed by a double from Leah Schaefer (Fr., Marshall, Minn.) pushed the lead to 12-0, where it would sit for the remainder of the inning. Schaefer recorded her first-career RBI on the play.

Game Notes

"It was a rough start to the trip as we were not sharp against St. Francis," commented head coach Shane Bouman. "Two errors cost us five runs and our offense was left on the tarmac. The ladies rebounded well with Ellie Jacobson throwing a great five innings and the offense scoring 12 runs. We have a huge opportunity tomorrow against a top-10 team."

Up Next: Northwestern returns to the diamond tomorrow for a pair of games at the Tucson Invitational Games. They will face No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m. and Ottawa (Ariz.) at 12:00 p.m. Both times are listed in central time.
