Women's Tennis Splits Outings in Minnesota

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwestern split a two-match set today in Owatonna, Minnesota, defeating Wartburg (Iowa) and falling to Wisconsin-LaCrosse in non-conference action.

In a 5-4 win over Wartburg, the Raiders took five singles matches and two doubles. Julia Kutz (So., Sheridan, Wyo.) won in a 10-6 tiebreaker, Wynne Vandersall (Sr., Martelle, Iowa) swept two sets, and Hannah Beckloff (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.) also won in a tiebreaker. In extras, Grace Twelmeyer (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) and Maria Esther Shortenhaus (Jr., Buffalo Center, Iowa) each picked up one-set victories. The doubles teams of Kutz/Anderson and Furmanova/Vandersall won 8-3 and 8-2, respectively.

"We went into five tiebreakers with Wartburg so the matches were close," said head coach Jamie De Jong. "Beckloff was our final match and ended up in a tiebreaker to decide the team win. She managed to persevere through to give us our first win of the spring season."

Wisconsin-LaCrosse was a difficult outing for Northwestern, as the Eagles won all singles matches and took the doubles point. In singles, Vandersall took her opponent to a tiebreaker set, falling 11-9.

"UW-LaCrosse was a tough matchup," De Jong commented. "Vandersall went to a tiebreaker but went down in the end. We played stronger than last week. We'll keep working at it in practice."

Up Next: Northwestern will have nearly a month off before facing Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) and Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in a weekend set on March 17-18 in St. Peter, Minnesota.
