Northwestern Drops Regular Season Finale at Hastings

Emilee Danner notches her fifth double-double of the season

HASTINGS, Neb. – Despite the fifth double-double of the season from senior Emilee Danner, the (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (19-9, 14-8 GPAC) dropped the regular season finale on the road at Hastings College (11-17, 7-15 GPAC) Saturday afternoon, 58-40.

Hastings got off to a fast start this afternoon, playing loose with nothing to lose, shooting 57% from the floor in the opening quarter to jump out to the 19-11 lead after one.

In the second quarter, Northwestern would go cold, hitting just two field goals in the period. Maddie Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) scored five of the seven Red Raider points in the second quarter. Three of the five field goals for the Broncos would come from deep, as two lay-ups would push their lead up to 32-18 at the halftime break.

The Red Raiders would outscore the Broncos for the only quarter in the third, putting up 10 points to the Broncos nine but it would not be enough to cut into the deficit heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Hastings would keep NWC at bay in the final quarter, as they would end the season on a winning note at home with the 58-40 victory.

GAME NOTES:
  • Emilee Danner notched her fifth double-double of the season – and her career – this afternoon with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Maddie Jones led the team with her 13 points, but committed 11 turnovers.
  • NWC managed to win the rebounding battle with a +6-margin (43-37), as Taylor VanderVelde and Molly Schany grabbed seven and six boards, respectively.
  • Schany was one rebound off her season average (7.0).
  • The Raiders struggled offensively, scoring no more than 12 points in any quarter this afternoon, while shooting just 25.4% from the floor on the game.
  • From deep, the Raiders hit just four of their 25 3-pointer attempts (16.0).
  • Hastings shot at a 40.7% clip to pace themselves to the 18-point win, though they led by as many as 23 points late in the fourth quarter.
  • Just five Raiders scored two or more points in the game, while just two sat in double digits – Jones and Danner.
Up Next: Northwestern will prepare for the 2023 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) conference tournament next week with the Quarterfinals slated for Wednesday, February 22. With the loss today, and the Dakota Wesleyan win over Concordia (Neb.), the Red Raiders earned the No. 5-seed and will travel back up to Mitchell, S.D. to face the DWU Tigers. More information to come early next week.
