Red Raiders Fall to Dakota Wesleyan in GPAC Quarterfinals

Maddie Jones becomes third Raider to notch 1,000 career points this season

MITCHELL, S.D. – Despite 20-point performances from Maddie Jones and Molly Schany, the (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (19-10, 14-8 GPAC) fell to the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University (22-7, 15-7 GPAC) in the Quarterfinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) conference tournament Tuesday evening.

Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) becomes the 31st Red Raider to notch 1,000 career points tonight, scoring a game-high 25 points in the effort. She becomes the third Raider this season to notch the career milestone this season.

It was Northwestern who struck first, as Molly Schany (Jr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) notched the first four Red Raider points of the contest. Schany notched five points, while Jones added four in the opening quarter. NWC held Dakota Wesleyan to just 3-for-17 shooting in the opening frame, holding an 11-7 advantage early in the game. Neither team was able to hit from deep in the opening quarter, as both sides missed the four 3-pointers attempted.

Early in the second quarter, DWU took their first lead of the contest at 14-13 with eight minutes left in the half. Down three, Hali Anderson (So., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) hit Northwestern's first 3-pointer of the contest to even the game back up. The Tigers would open up a five-point lead at 26-21, as the Raiders would use their first time out of the game. DWU would continue to shoot the ball well in the period, leading by as many as eight points. Though, late in the quarter Jones would knock down four big free throws, driving to the paint hard twice. Anderson would put up five points in the second quarter off the bench, to keep Northwestern within striking distance as the Tigers held the 31-27 halftime lead.

Dakota Wesleyan would open up a 10-point lead in the third quarter, the first double digit lead for either side, at 47-37 with just under four minutes to play in the third. Dakota Wesleyan would consistently send the Raiders to the free throw line in the frame, shooting eight in the quarter while converting five of them. Dakota Wesleyan would maintain the lead at the end of the third, leading 51-42.

It was an uphill battle for the Raiders enter the final period of play. Jones would score five-straight points, cutting the DWU lead to six at 53-47 within the first few minutes. Every time Northwestern would try to make a push, the Tigers would find a way to answer and keep the Raiders at arm length. Late in the game, the Tigers would hit their free throws to seal the game, prevailing 69-62 in front of the home crowd.
