Softball Sweeps Mount Mercy in First Day of Dome Classic

NWC picks up first shutout of the season in Game 1

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa The Northwestern College softball team (6-0, 0-0 GPAC) continued their winning ways on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against Mount Mercy (0-2, 0-0 Heart) at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

GAME 1: NWC 3, (RV) Mount Mercy 0

Pitching Decisions
Win: Kameryn Etherington (4-0)
Loss: Jayna Witzany (0-1)
Save: Kate Kralik (1)

How It Happened
Debuting in the Dordt Dome for the first time this season, Northwestern wasted no time getting on the board and getting acclimated to the new playing venue.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom half of the first inning, Emily Strasser (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) came up with a clutch hit just over the shortstop's head to plate the first two Red Raider runs. It proved to be the only run support Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) would need in the circle.

In the third, Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) led the inning off with a single to center field, as Ashtyn Billings (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa) would come into run for the Red Raiders. After a sac bunt, Billings would end up on third with one out thanks to a wild pitch. She would come in to score on an RBI groundout by Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa).

Mount Mercy would threaten with a pair of runners in the top of the seventh inning, putting them on first and second. However, Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) would come in and shut the door, getting two line outs and keeping the Mustangs off the scoreboard.

Game Notes
  • Emily Strasser continues to lead the team in batting average (.385) and RBIs (5), after notching a hit and two RBIs.
  • Charli Bomgaars also recorded one hit and had the other Red Raider RBI.
  • Jennifer Boeve and Madysn Grotewold recorded the other two of the four Northwestern hits on the game.
  • Northwestern picks up their first shutout win of the season behind 6.1 solid innings from Kameryn Etherington in the circle.
  • Kate Kralik picks up her first save of the season, recording the final two outs for the Red Raiders.

GAME 2: NWC 9, (RV) Mount Mercy 4

How It Happened
Northwestern strung hits together in the third and fifth innings to help them to a 9-4 win over Mount Mercy in game two of today's doubleheader.

The Raiders were first on the board in the top of the third when Charli Bomgaars hit a single, stole second, and was driven home on an RBI single from Jennifer Boeve to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) drove in a run, followed by a bases-clearing 2-RBI double from Gwen Mikkelsen (Jr., Casa Grande, Ariz.) to right, pushing the Raider lead to 4-0.

Mount Mercy made some noise in their half of the fourth inning, taking advantage of an error and later scoring on a base on balls and a sacrifice fly.

Northwestern added to their lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Emily Strasser started out the inning with a leadoff single, while Mikkelsen reached to set up a double that reached the fence in left field for Kameryn Etherington. Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) then slapped a ball to deep right-center that resulted in an RBI triple to make the score 7-3.

Now, with a four-run advantage, Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) came on in relief and shut down the side.

The Raiders added two additional runs in the final frames, including an RBI triple for Jennifer Boeve, while Kralik only allowed one hit, a home run, in her three innings of relief.

Game Notes

"We got to play in a great facility that is close to home, which makes it nice not only for our girls but also for fans who want to come out and watch," said head coach Shane Bouman. "We pitched well, played solid defense, and got some key hits. We have a couple of huge games tomorrow, so we're excited to be back at it."

Up Next: Northwestern will return to the American State Bank Sports Complex tomorrow for matchups with No. 11 Grand View and Peru State (Neb.). Saturday's games are set for 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
