SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – It was another successful weekend for the Northwestern softball team (8-0, 0-0 GPAC), this time defeating No. 11 Grand View (2-1, 0-0 Heart) and Peru State (Neb.) (0-4, 0-0 Heart) to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

How It Happened
Northwestern used exciting defensive plays and opportunistic offense to down No. 11-ranked Grand View on Saturday morning at the American State Bank Sports Complex for their seventh win of the early season.

The Vikings struck right away in the bottom of the first, bringing in two runs on a throwing error to go up 2-0.

That would be all the Raiders would give up, as the Northwestern offense would heat up in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. Chloe Gallegos (So., Carroll, Iowa) started with a one-out double over the head of the right fielder and advanced to third on an error before being brought home on a sacrifice bunt attempt from Kameryn Etherington (Jr., Algona, Iowa) that turned into a fielder's choice. With the top of the order up and the bases loaded, Jennifer Boeve (Sr., Hastings, Neb.) drove in two runs on a base hit to give the Raiders their first lead of the day. Northwestern added another run on a double-steal attempt that saw Charli Bomgaars (So., Boyden, Iowa) cross home plate.

The next inning would spell more of the same for the Raiders, using six hits to score five more runs. Gallegos drove in a run, while Maddie Kvatek (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple. In the next at-bat, Bomgaars singled to allow Kvatek to score and give Northwestern a 9-2 advantage.

Kate Kralik (So., Indianola, Iowa) continued her dominance in the circle, holding Grand View to just one hit in her final two innings of work, while the Raiders extended their lead in the sixth on a pair of bases-loaded walks by Kvatek and Bomgaars to end the game in six innings.

Game Notes
  • Maddie Kvatek went 2-3 with three RBI and a triple.
  • Jennifer Boeve had two hits with two runs batted in.
  • Kate Kralik had two strikeouts and only gave up two hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
  • The Raiders drew 10 walks in the win.
  • Kameryn Etherington went 2-2 at the plate while also pitching 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.

How It Happened
The Raiders picked up their second win of the day, pulling ahead again after trailing early against Peru State to win 4-3 at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

The Bobcats were on the board first, getting a run on a base hit with runners on first and second in the second inning.

Northwestern answered in their half of the inning as Charli Bomgaars reached with an out and the bases loaded to tie the game. Later in the frame, Jennifer Boeve continued her effective day at the plate, hitting a double to left that brought home Bomgaars and Madysn Grotewold (Jr., Larchwood, Iowa), giving the Raiders a 3-1 lead.

The Raiders added one more, as it was Bomgaars once again who hit an RBI single to take advantage of Maddie Kvatek's leadoff walk.

Although the Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the fifth, the pitching duo of Ashtyn Billings (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa) and Kameryn Etherington only gave up one hit the rest of the way to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Game Notes
  • Charli Bomgaars went 1-3 with two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Jennifer Boeve had two RBI and a double in the leadoff spot.
  • Ashtyn Billings moved to 2-0 in the circle with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • Ellie Jacobson (Jr., Humboldt, Iowa) struck out four batters in 3.1 innings pitched.

"We showed a lot of moxie today with pitching, defense, and aggressive baserunning that really paid off," commented head coach Shane Bouman.

Up Next: The Raiders will take the field again next Friday, February 17 for matchups with William Penn (Iowa) and Dakota State (S.D.). First pitches are set for 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Sioux Center's American State Bank Sports Complex.
