Red Raiders Win Third-Straight Game; Downs Doane 80-53

Emily TerWee notches a career-high 17 points

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Behind a career-high 17-point performance from freshman Emily TerWee, the (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (8-3, 5-2 GPAC) got off to an extremely hot start to down the Tigers of Doane University (6-4, 4-3 GPAC) in the final home game of the calendar year Saturday evening.
It was a fast start for the home team tonight, continuing in the footsteps of the Red Raider football team from early in the day. Jumping out to a fast 9-0 lead with four quick points from TerWee (Fr., Larchwood, Iowa) in the paint and a 3-pointer from Maddie Jones (Gr., Twin Lakes, Iowa). The Red Raiders would end the quarter on an 18-3 run with five Raiders scoring in the frame and no one having more than four points.

The run would continue into the second quarter, leading 20-3 before the Tigers hit a free throw to end the push. Midway through the frame, Doane would pull to within 10 points (24-14) but an eight-point run with a pair of threes from Jones and Akaysa Duitscher (Fr., Rolfe, Iowa) quickly extended the lead back out at 32-14. Northwestern would push that lead up to 20+ with back-to-back layups from Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa) as they would hold the healthy 41-18 advantage at the break.

Keeping their foot on the gas pedal into the second half, the Red Raiders would take their largest lead of the contest at 27 points with a jumper from Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.). Anderson would pace the team with her six points in the quarter, as Northwestern kept at least a 20-point lead the entire quarter, despite only outscoring the Tigers 18-16 in the third.

Davis took over in the fourth quarter, notching a quarter-high 12 points for the Red Raiders. Pushing nearly a 30-point lead early in the final quarter, Northwestern never saw their lead dip to under 23 points. Late in the quarter, head coach Kristin Rotert emptied the bench as all 15 available players saw action in the 80-53 win. The Red Raiders would end the 2023 portion of their conference slate with a 27-point, 80-53, win over Doane.
