Red Raiders Pick Up Big Road Win Over No. 13 Dakota State

Emily TerWee posts her first-career double-double

MADISON, S.D. – The (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (9-3, 5-2 GPAC) picks up their first win over a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) with an 89-77 road win at No. 13-ranked Dakota State University (8-4, 0-0 NSAA). Emily TerWee picked up her first-career double-double leading the team with her 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Dakota State scored the first five points of the contest and would hold a slim one-score advantage most of the first quarter. With under three minutes to play in the opening 10 minutes, a 3-pointer from Maddie Jones (Gr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) would give the Red Raiders their first lead of the game at 13-12. The three would spark a 10-2 run to end the quarter with Northwestern holding a 20-14 lead after one.

The Trojans started the second quarter on a 6-0 spurt to pull even at 20-20 in the first three minutes, but a Red Raider run of six-straight points put the momentum back to Northwestern thanks to five of the points coming from Hali Anderson (Jr., Saint Ansgar, Iowa). Post play picked up the rest of the way as Northwestern pushed their lead into double digits and a 3-pointers from Kaydin Davis (Sr., Buffalo, Wyo.) would give NWC the 34-24 lead at the halftime break.

Out of the half, Dakota State would again make a push on their home floor, evening the score at 36-36 with seven and a half left in the third. Yet again, the Red Raiders responded with a run of their own to pull back to a 42-36 lead. With a pair of baskets in the remaining minutes of the frame, NWC extended their lead back into double digits with their largest lead of the contest at 11, 59-48.

Free throws in the final frame – shooting 10-for-13 from the line – would keep the Trojans at bay and not allow for another late game push. Northwestern erupted for a season-high for points in a quarter in the fourth with their 28, as the two teams combined for 54 points. The last eight Red Raider points would come from the free throw line, as Northwestern walked out of the gym with an 89-77 win over No. 13-ranked Dakota State for their first win over a top-25 team this season.
