Free Throws Down the Stretch Lifts Raiders Past Dakota Wesleyan

Molly Schany records fifth 20-point game of her Red Raider career

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Maddie Jones scored the last six points of the game at the free throw line as the (RV) Northwestern College women's basketball team (7-3, 4-2 GPAC) picked up the first win over Dakota Wesleyan (5-3, 4-2 GPAC) since the 2020-21 season in a 69-67 thriller inside the Bultman Center Wednesday night.
Northwestern got off to a strong start after a week away from the home floor, jumping out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter of play behind seven points from Molly Schany (Sr., Emmetsburg, Iowa) early. Northwestern attacked the paint early for easy buckets, while the Tigers settled for 3-pointers – 11 taken in the first 10 minutes – and settled for a 22.7% mark from the floor.

Making an adjustment in the second quarter, Dakota Wesleyan stopped settling for three's and looked for easier buckets and, in turn, outscored Northwestern 20-15 in the second quarter. A quick 7-0 spurt saw the Tigers draw even at 20-20 as Shalayne Nagel hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. A pair of Tiger free throws in the ensuing possession would see them take their first lead since it was 5-2 in the opening minutes, with just over five minutes left in the half. Trailing by three with four minutes to play, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run to take a 28-25 lead and would hold onto a slim 30-29 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.

The second half would heat up even more as both teams used runs and took leads, but none would truly stick throughout the second half as the game would come down to be decided in the final minute. Dakota Wesleyan utilized their second-straight quarter of outscoring Northwestern (20-17 in the third) to take a five-point lead into the final quarter at 51-46.

Northwestern got back on track in the final frame, shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, but would hit their free throws when it mattered most. With two and a half minutes left on the clock, the Tigers would hold a 64-56 eight-point advantage, seemingly coasting to a win as they had scored five-straight points to build the lead.

The Red Raiders would not give up the fight and bring the fight right back to the Tigers, as in the final two and a half minutes would outscore DWU 13-3, thanks to six points from Jones (Sr., Twin Lakes, Iowa) with all her points coming from the charity strike.

With 10 seconds left, the Tigers hit a free throw to take a 67-64 lead and they would choose to foul to prevent Northwestern to get a three off. Hitting only one of two free throws, Dakota Wesleyan left the door open for the Red Raiders and they would make the most of the opportunity. Jones hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds to pull within one-point (67-66, DWU). Following a time out, the Tigers would turn the ball over on the inbound and a foul would send Jones right back to the charity strike. She would, again, hit both free throws and give NWC the 68-67 lead. Down by two, the Tigers got a shot off but it was well off the mark as the Red Raiders prevailed over Dakota Wesleyan for the first time in the Kristin Rotert era.
