Northwestern Tests NCAA Division II Augustana

Jones reaches career-high with 27 points

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – -The Northwestern women's basketball team (9-4, 5-2 GPAC) went on the road and challenged NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) (2-9, 1-6 NSIC) on Saturday night at the Elmen Center, falling 72-67 in the nonconference matchup. Maddie Jones scored a career-high 27 points in the effort.

"We were really good through three quarters but just needed one more stop in the fourth," commented head coach Kristin Rotert. "Had an open look late and a couple of good possessions around the basket, so we were definitely in the game, but credit to Augustana for making free throws down the stretch."

The two teams played to an even score in the first quarter as both sides traded baskets through the first five and a half minutes. Augustana's lead expanded to as many as four points on a three-pointer to make it 16-12, but the Raiders finished the quarter scoring six of the next eight points to tie it at 18-18 after the first 10 minutes, with all six points coming from Jones.

Northwestern began the second frame by taking a 20-18 lead, their largest of the night, on one of 10 made baskets by Emily TerWee, who has now reached double-figures in four of the last five games. The Vikings went on to score the next six points to create some separation, holding their lead at around five points for the remainder of the half.

Trailing by three at the break, the Raiders went to the hot hand in TerWee in the third quarter, as she scored eight points in less than four minutes to bring it back to a 38-38 stalemate. The Vikings once again tried to widen the gap, but a Lexie Van Kekerix three before the buzzer drew it to an even 47-47 going into the fourth.

With an even slate to start the final quarter, Augustana opened with a 5-0 run before the Raiders found their way back in front for the first time of the half on a TerWee bucket in the paint, making it 56-55 with four and a half to play. Later, trailing 64-62 with a minute to go, Jones drove into the paint but could not convert as free throws then became a factor. Despite trailing by six with 30 seconds, Northwestern showed resilience, with Jones hitting a three to keep her team alive. Then, with one final possession, the Raiders got an open look from deep, rimming out as Augustana came out victorious against a valiant Northwestern effort.

"We played this game to test ourselves and expose our team to a higher level of play. It's tough to lose, but I think we got better in this game," Rotert noted.
