Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season

Carlson and Van Kalsbeek score 22 and 21, respectively

HASTINGS, Neb. – Despite leading at halftime, the Northwestern Red Raiders (7-1, 3-1 GPAC) lost for the first time this season, taken down by the Hastings Broncos (8-2, 5-0 GPAC) today on the road.

Northwestern was on fire in the opening five minutes, building up an 18-2 lead through the first 4:27. It was not until the 11-minute mark that the Broncos came back within single digits and even within a point. However, the Raiders closed the half strong, as Keyton Moser (Sr., Hull, Iowa) stopped the Hastings run and Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) followed with one of his six made threes to go up 35-27 with 4:44 remaining in the half. After a Zach LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) trey made it 40-31, Hastings made a three just before the buzzer to cut it to six at the break.

The Raiders led for a majority of the second half, but Hastings hung around to tie the score three times, including at 6:01, where the momentum started to flip. Then, with Northwestern trailing 74-71 with under two minutes to play, Carlson converted from beyond the arc to knot it up at 74-74. Two possessions later, Hastings' Tyrique McMurrin corralled an offensive rebound on a missed three and put it back in for the lead. After the ball skipped out of bounds on Northwestern's following possession, the Broncos sealed the game with free throws to end Northwestern's winning streak and remain undefeated in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play.

GAME NOTES
  • Dillon Carlson led the Raiders with 22 points.
  • Alex Van Kalsbeek scored 21 points and had three assists.
  • It was the first time this season that Northwestern had two 20-point scorers.
  • Four of Northwestern's five starters reached double-figures in scoring.
  • Hastings shot a blistering 59.3% in the second half.
