Raider Men Take Down (RV) Vanguard Behind LaFave’s Double-Double

Carlson, Van Kalsbeek, and Moser also in double-figures

FULLERTON, Calif. – In their second game of their west coast trip, the No. 13-ranked Northwestern men's basketball team (11-1, 5-1 GPAC) took down (RV) Vanguard (Calif.) (7-3, 0-0 GSAC) with the help of balanced scoring and strong overall play from Zach LaFave.

Though the Raider lead never reached double-digits in the first half, Northwestern held the pace, jumping ahead 10-6 early with a LaFave (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) basket. Vanguard countered, twice taking its largest lead of the game at three points in the next six minutes, but the Raiders regained control on a 10-0 run bookended by Dillon Carlson (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa) three-pointers. Leading 29-22 with six minutes until the break, the Raiders went on another run, this time a 7-0 rally on consecutive threes from Conner Geddes (Jr., Harrisburg, S.D.) to lead by nine entering the final three minutes. The teams traded threes before the half, as Northwestern led at halftime 43-37.

Once again the Raiders were quick out of the gate in the latter 20 minutes, building their lead to 10 on a Keyton Moser (Sr., Hull, Iowa) lay-in for what was at that time their largest lead. Later on, after a Marcus Kelderman (So., Boyden, Iowa) layup made the score 56-46 with 13:43 left, Vanguard was fighting back from double-digits the rest of the way. The largest lead of the night came on a Moser tip-in to make it a 17-point margin (71-54), as the Raiders earned a quality neutral-site win 86-73.
